The largest artificial intelligence supercomputing center in Hong Kong has been launched
2024-12-10
The largest artificial intelligence supercomputing center in Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as the supercomputing center) will officially enter service on December 9th, providing computing power support to local universities, research and development institutions, enterprises, etc., and assisting in the construction of the Hong Kong International Innovation and Technology Center. Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, attended the opening ceremony held at Cyberport on the same day and said that artificial intelligence is a key technology for developing new quality productivity and has enormous potential. In the face of this wave of technology, Hong Kong needs to keep pace with the times, actively layout, and seize the opportunity for the development of artificial intelligence. The Supercomputing Center not only provides advanced computing capabilities to promote industrial development, but also serves as a cradle for cultivating talents related to artificial intelligence, injecting new impetus into the high-quality development of Hong Kong's economy. Chen Ximing, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cyberport, introduced that the first phase of the artificial intelligence supercomputing center facilities will provide computing power of 1300 PFLOPS (floating point operations of 130 quadrillion times per second), and gradually increase to the level of 3000 PFLOPS next year to meet the urgent demand for computing power in the technology industry. The Cyberport will use the supercomputing center as the core engine to build an artificial intelligence ecosystem, gather innovative resources from mainland and overseas talents, and promote industrial development. The SAR government launched a HKD 3 billion "Artificial Intelligence Funding Scheme" in October this year, providing financial support to local universities, research and development institutions, and key enterprises to help them make good use of the computing power resources of supercomputing centers and achieve more scientific breakthroughs. At present, the program has received over 10 applications from local universities, startups, and research and development institutions. On that day, the Cyberport Artificial Intelligence Laboratory was simultaneously launched to showcase artificial intelligence application solutions and promote cooperation among enterprises.
