I have completed a new positioning of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology in my academic field
2024-12-09
The 3rd China Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Technology Conference was held in Beijing from December 7th to 8th. At the meeting, the China 21st Century Agenda Management Center released the research results of the new version of the "China CCUS Technology Development Roadmap" (hereinafter referred to as the "Roadmap"). This achievement is an update to the 2011 and 2019 roadmaps, and also a repositioning, reassessment, and re prediction of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technology by academia under the "dual carbon" goal. The new roadmap believes that CCUS technology will not only be a key technology for large-scale low-carbon utilization of fossil fuels, but also an important component of the technology combination required to achieve the goal of "carbon neutrality". The new roadmap points out that in the future, CCUS technology will be the only technological means to achieve net zero emissions of fossil fuels in the process of building a zero carbon energy system; CCUS technology is one of the feasible technical solutions for achieving deep emissions reduction in the carbon reduction industry in reshaping zero carbon process flows; In establishing a negative carbon technology system, CCUS technology is the fundamental technical guarantee for achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. In recent years, significant progress has been made in various CCUS technologies in China, and the overall level is close to that of the world. The new roadmap shows that from 2020 to present, the number of CCUS projects planned and operated nationwide has doubled from 49 to 126. During this period, CCUS technology not only demonstrated million ton projects in traditional industries such as electricity, oil and gas, chemicals, and steel, but also began small-scale demonstrations and explorations in niche industries such as glass and printing and dyeing. At the same time, the technological development of various links in CCUS in China is not balanced, and there is still a significant gap with the international advanced level in key technologies such as direct air capture, pipeline transportation, and enhanced oil recovery. CCUS technology is a hot topic in international competition, and it is necessary to comprehensively consider China's resource endowment, development stage, and technological level, and scientifically formulate technological development plans. Therefore, the new roadmap proposes four suggestions for the development of CCUS technology in China: firstly, to integrate CCUS technology into the national major strategy of "carbon neutrality" for overall consideration; The second is to build a CCUS technology system oriented towards the goal of "carbon neutrality"; Thirdly, formulate and improve relevant systems, regulations, and standard systems; The fourth is to strengthen industrial policy support and explore policy incentives that are suitable for China's national conditions.
