The fire risk in the "ingenious use" of electric heaters should be particularly vigilant
2024-12-06
Recently, there has been a discussion on some social media platforms about the "wonderful use" of electric heaters. Netizens have shared tips: drying clothes, baking sweet potatoes, and even some people have "rolled up" tin foil clams, which look very delicious. However, such phenomena make firefighters worried because these "clever uses" pose significant safety hazards, and even a slight mistake can easily lead to fires. To illustrate the severity of the problem, the Gongshu District Fire Rescue Station in Hangzhou conducted a special experiment. In the experiment, firefighters overturned a 450 watt electric heater and placed pork, preserved meat, and shrimp on a protective net. The thermometer shows that after the electric heater is turned on for 1 minute, the center temperature of the heating tube inside the device reaches 600 ℃. About 5 minutes later, a thrilling scene occurred: the oil on the surface of the meat dripped onto the heating tube, instantly creating sparks and posing a risk of fire. Firefighters hope to raise awareness among more people about the dangers of using electric heaters for grilling and barbecuing through experiments. However, in real life, many people are accustomed to the use of "smart" electric heaters. As a result, cases of related fire accidents are not uncommon and urgently need to be highly vigilant by the whole society. Coincidentally, in response to the frequent occurrence of electric blanket fires in various regions since the beginning of winter, the Fire Rescue Brigade of Tongzhou District, Beijing recently conducted a fire experiment simulating the breakage of electric blanket heating wires. The results showed that poor contact between two heating wires could generate temperatures of up to 800 ℃ or more, which could instantly ignite cotton in bedding. Firefighters would like to remind everyone that most electric blanket fires are caused by the breakage or poor contact of heating wires, resulting in high temperatures. When using an electric blanket, it is necessary to turn on the electricity for heating in advance, turn off the switch when going to bed, and it is best to unplug the plug. In other words, preventing such accidents requires being cautious and careful in order to ensure safety. Winter is a dry season with a high incidence of fires throughout the year. On November 22nd, the National Fire and Rescue Bureau held a routine press conference and revealed that a prominent feature of winter fires is the phenomenon of "small fires causing death" in residential areas. In the past five years, there have been an average of 96000 reported winter residential fires and 697 deaths, accounting for 36.9% and 82% of the total number of winter fires, respectively, making it the place with the highest incidence of fire fatalities. This set of data serves as a warning to people: fires are ruthless, and home fire prevention cannot tolerate any carelessness or lucky mentality. Recently, the Office of the State Council Work Safety Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management jointly issued a safety reminder: the use of electricity, gas, and fire increases in winter. The public should pay attention to the safety of using gas and coal, maintain indoor ventilation, and prevent fires, gas leaks, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Strictly implementing the requirements outlined above is an inherent requirement and necessary measure for us to ensure the safety of ourselves and our families. Firefighters from Gongshu District in Hangzhou and Tongzhou District in Beijing conducted experimental activities, which vividly interpreted the above safety tips and had strong pertinence, shock and persuasiveness, playing a twice the result with half the effort in warning and education. I hope other places and relevant departments can organize more similar experimental science popularization activities, make efforts to improve the effectiveness, integrate publicity and education with hidden danger investigation, supervision and law enforcement, strengthen typical fire cases and law enforcement warning education, analyze problem education, and guide the public to prevent fires before they happen. Fire is more fierce than a tiger, and fire safety cannot tolerate any mishaps. We should always tighten the "safety string", actively learn fire safety knowledge, participate in fire drills, and enhance our self rescue and mutual aid abilities. Whether in the home, workplace, or other places, it is necessary to adhere to safety regulations for fire, electricity, and gas use, handle flammable and explosive materials properly, firmly say "no" to various fire hazards, and take the initiative to prevent and resolve the risk of "small fires causing death", so that safety is always with us and happiness is always with us.
