Exploring new models for cultivating top-notch talents through cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao
2024-12-06
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), which aspires to become the world's first interdisciplinary university, recently welcomed its first batch of 229 graduate students. Nearly 60% of these graduates have been admitted to universities such as Stanford University, Cambridge University, and Tsinghua University, while others will join large enterprises such as Huawei, Tencent, and BYD, or start businesses in national strategic emerging industries and future industries. Two years ago, as one of the youngest universities in Guangdong Hong Kong cooperative education, the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong (Guangzhou) officially opened in Nansha, Guangzhou. Since its establishment, the University of Hong Kong (Guangzhou) has been full of innovative ideas: without setting up departments, pioneering "hubs" and "academic domains", and exploring new academic structures and talent training models. With the deepening of the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, cooperation in the field of education in the Greater Bay Area has become increasingly close, and Guangdong Hong Kong Macao are jointly exploring new models for cultivating top-notch talents. Breaking down disciplinary barriers and exploring new directions for talent cultivation, interdisciplinary integration is a key means of cultivating top-notch talents. Traditional single discipline education can no longer meet the future society's demand for composite talents. Joint universities of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao are actively trying to break down disciplinary barriers and promote interdisciplinary integration of science, engineering, humanities, management, and other fields in the Greater Bay Area. Ni Mingxuan, President of the University of Hong Kong (Guangzhou), said that the school has explored and implemented a series of "student-centered" innovative talent training measures based on the characteristics of integrated disciplines, including implementing general training, integrated training, and academy system, exploring the establishment of project-based master's student training projects, and promoting innovative practices combining artificial intelligence with education. The vast majority of the first batch of graduates from the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong (Guangzhou) come from the Red Bird Master's Program, an academic graduate program established by the university to cultivate leading talents in integrated disciplines. This project adopts group project-based teaching, aiming to cultivate students into composite innovative and entrepreneurial leaders with distinctive professional strengths, broad disciplinary knowledge, comprehensive transferable abilities, and excellent humanistic literacy. The cooperation between the two places in running schools has expanded students' academic resources and perspectives, and also promoted collaborative innovation in talent cultivation. The University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong (Guangzhou) and the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong have maintained close cooperation. Under the framework of "One University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong, Two Schools complement each other", nearly 1300 students from both schools have visited each other's campuses, covering exchange activities such as internships, cultural exchanges, industry inspections, and competitions. The joint establishment of universities between the two places not only has similarities, but also explores its own unique path for talent cultivation. HKUST (Guangzhou) has the same "science and technology innovation" characteristics as HKUST, and innovates its talent training model by establishing undergraduate research projects. The training of research talents is advanced to the first year of undergraduate studies, stimulating students' research enthusiasm and innovation potential, and cultivating technology innovation talents with forward-looking thinking and practical abilities. At the 2024 International Genetic Engineering Robot Competition, the Coral Cola team, formed spontaneously by 15 undergraduate students from the University of Hong Kong (Guangzhou), won the gold medal. These children are not limited by their majors, exams, or rankings, and the school has given them enough space and support to explore unknown fields freely. We all unleashed infinite imagination, from luminous mosquitoes to genetic biological circuits, and ultimately determined the topic of coral bleaching from over 20 ideas. Everyone adopts a project-based division of labor and collaboration, preparing for the competition like a startup company Team member Xu Hua said. Established in 2005, the first Guangdong Hong Kong Macao joint university - Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University Joint International College (referred to as "Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University United International College") has opened cutting-edge majors such as data science and artificial intelligence in recent years, and integrated relevant majors into "departments", which has accumulated the foundation for interdisciplinary integration. Chen Zhi, president of Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, said that breaking disciplinary barriers, developing interdisciplinary, especially liberal arts and science, and promoting exchanges and cooperation between different disciplines is one of the important directions for the future disciplinary development of Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. Beijing Normal University - Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, which is characterized by an innovative and liberal university, has always advocated educating people as the core, committed to helping students realize their self-worth, and shoulder the responsibility of integrating the world and contributing to society. In recent years, the school has obvious internationalization characteristics and has established cooperative relationships with more than 70 universities around the world, providing rich opportunities for students to study abroad, exchange, experience foreign cultures and education. In the summer vacation of 2024, nearly 450 students from Beishi Hong Kong Baptist University participated in 19 overseas summer projects, an increase of nearly 30% over 2023. The dual integration development to enhance the overall education quality in the Greater Bay Area is also actively extending to Hong Kong and Macao in Guangdong universities, and the dual integration development of education in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao is already on the way. The Hong Kong College of Shenzhen University will officially open in Hong Kong in 2024, and Hong Kong freshman Huang Xilin has become one of the 95 new students admitted to the Network and New Media major for the first time. Shenzhen University provides students with many opportunities and resources, and I hope to seize the development opportunities of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area and take every step steadily Huang Xilin said. The Hong Kong College of Shenzhen University is affiliated with Shenzhen University, aiming to actively explore and promote the two-way integration of education between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, serve the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and provide more diverse choices for Hong Kong youth to receive high-quality higher education locally. Universities and research institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao each have their own advantages. By establishing cooperation mechanisms, resource sharing and complementary advantages can be achieved, which can effectively improve the overall quality of education and research strength. In 2016, Sun Yat sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macau led the establishment of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao University Alliance. The alliance was officially included in the Development Plan Outline of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in 2019. Since its establishment, it has actively promoted cooperation among member universities in various aspects such as scientific research and innovation, talent cultivation, and social services. This collaborative innovation model not only helps solve complex scientific problems that are difficult for a single institution to overcome, but also cultivates students' teamwork and cross-cultural communication skills. The integration of industry and education is also one of the important ways to cultivate top-notch talents. The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has numerous high-tech enterprises and research institutions, providing unique conditions for universities to carry out industry education integration. Through deep cooperation with enterprises, universities can timely understand industry needs, adjust teaching content, and ensure the direction and quality of talent cultivation. Exploring new models for cultivating top-notch talents through cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, providing continuous talent support for the development of the Greater Bay Area and even the whole country, and promoting high-quality regional economic development.
