China deposits Huangyan Island baseline declaration and nautical chart with the United Nations
2024-12-04
On December 2nd local time, Ambassador Geng Shuang, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, deposited the "Declaration of the Government of the People's Republic of China on the Baseline of Huangyan Island's Territorial Sea" and relevant nautical charts with Acting Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Matthias on behalf of the Chinese government. The Declaration and nautical charts will be published on the United Nations website. Huangyan Island is an inherent territory of China. On November 10th of this year, the Chinese government, in accordance with international law such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone, delineated and announced the baseline of Huangyan Island's territorial sea. This is a normal measure taken by the Chinese government to strengthen ocean management in accordance with the law and international conventions. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal states should deposit a copy of their territorial sea baseline chart or geographic coordinate table with the Secretary General of the United Nations. This deposit is not only an international practice for China to fulfill its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as a contracting party, but also a legitimate move to defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
