Do not blindly use medication for winter virus infections

2024-12-04

COVID-19 infection, Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection, influenza... In winter, the incidence rate of respiratory diseases increases significantly. How to effectively determine the type of disease and provide timely and targeted treatment in the face of a mixed situation of multiple pathogens? Recently, at the press conference held by the National Health Commission, Chen Wenhui, chief physician of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, reminded that drugs should be used for different viruses to avoid blind abuse. "In winter, virus infection is easy to occur, such as influenza A virus, COVID-19, influenza virus, etc. Antibiotics have no effect on the virus." Chen Wenhui stated that there are different drugs for different viruses, and overuse of antibiotics may lead to increased coughing, yellow phlegm, fever without improvement, abnormal blood routine, and some patients may experience acute exacerbation of symptoms. Experts have provided some basic methods for determining the type of disease. Infection with influenza viruses such as H1N1 and H1N1 usually results in muscle soreness, fever, and clustered onset of symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and mild cough. Mycoplasma infection is more common in children and adolescents, and the main symptoms are fever, dry cough, sore throat, etc. COVID-19 infection can sometimes be accompanied by abnormal smell and taste. Norovirus infection is known as "winter vomiting disease" and is prone to cluster outbreaks in schools, kindergartens, and other institutions. Symptoms mainly include vomiting and diarrhea, accompanied by nausea and fever. Currently, there are no specific drugs or vaccines available for prevention and treatment. (New Society)
