Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, held talks with Stephen, Speaker of Nauru, in the Great Hall of the People on the afternoon of the 3rd.
Zhao Leji stated that in January of this year, Nauru made a decision to adhere to the One China principle and resume diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. This is a move that conforms to the historical trend and the trend of the times. Shortly after the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, President Xi Jinping held talks with President Adiong, who was visiting China, and reached important consensus on the development of China Norway relations. China is willing to work with Norway to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, and jointly create a beautiful future for bilateral relations on the basis of equal treatment, mutual respect, win-win cooperation, and openness and inclusiveness.
Zhao Leji pointed out that the One China principle is a universally recognized basic norm in international relations, as well as the political foundation and prerequisite for China's development of relations with countries around the world.   China will firmly support Nauru in safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and support Nauru in exploring a development path that is in line with its own national conditions. China welcomes Nauru's participation in the "the Belt and Road" initiative, and is willing to further deepen practical cooperation between the two countries, close people to people and cultural exchanges, strengthen multilateral cooperation, and jointly promote the implementation of global development initiatives, global security initiatives, and global civilization initiatives.
Zhao Leji stressed that the National People's Congress of China is willing to maintain the good momentum of high-level exchanges with the Nauru Parliament, expand multi-level and multi field counterpart exchanges, and help the development and construction of their respective countries. Both sides should improve legal documents that are conducive to pragmatic cooperation between the two countries, closely cooperate in multilateral mechanisms such as the Asian Parliament, and continuously enrich the connotation of exchanges and cooperation among legislative bodies. Members of parliament from Nauru are welcome to attend the seminar for members of parliament from Pacific island countries held by the National People's Congress of China, and come to China more often for a visit.
Zhao Leji introduced China's adherence to the concept that green mountains and clear waters are as valuable as mountains of gold and silver, and the achievements made in protecting the ecological environment and promoting green development. He stated that the legislative bodies of the two countries can carry out legislative and supervisory exchanges in the field of ecological and environmental protection, and contribute to the green and low-carbon development of the two countries and the joint response to climate change.
Stephen stated that Nauru's correct decision to restore diplomatic relations with China is a historic event in the development of bilateral relations. Congratulations to China for achieving great development achievements. Nauru firmly adheres to the one China principle, supports and actively participates in the construction of the "the Belt and Road" and the three major global initiatives. The Nauru Parliament is willing to strengthen exchanges with the National People's Congress of China and play the role of the legislature in consolidating political mutual trust, promoting sustainable development and deepening people to people and cultural exchanges.
