Cross border matchmaker sentenced for organizing multiple people to go abroad for blind dates and marriages

2024-12-02

In recent years, some illegal individuals have acted as "cross-border matchmakers" to seek profits by organizing single young men from China to go abroad for blind dates and marriages, without buying a house or a car, with very little dowry. They only need to pay around 100000 yuan to bring their foreign wives home. This can easily lead to financial losses and turn dreams into "nightmares". Recently, the Xiajin County Procuratorate in Shandong Province prosecuted the case of Zhou and Li for organizing others to illegally cross the national (border) border. After trial, the court made a first instance judgment. The defendant Zhou was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, suspended for three years, and fined 20000 yuan. The defendant Li was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years and six months, and fined 15000 yuan. In 2018, Zhou, a native of Fujian, posted a Pakistani blind date video on a short video platform, claiming that he could introduce foreign wives at a low cost. Li, a native of Shandong, plans to engage in a marriage agency business but struggles to find unmarried young women. After watching a short video, he contacted Zhou. You look for unmarried young men in China, and I look for unmarried young women in Pakistan. No matter how much money you charge, introduce someone and give me 120000 yuan, and the rest will be yours. If I don't succeed, I will refund the money Zhou promised. In order to make their "cross-border marriage agency" business more "legitimate" and easier to attract customers, Li opened a marriage agency service center store to attract customers. The one-stop matchmaking service has emerged, with Li responsible for contacting Chinese male youths, negotiating and collecting fees, and Zhou responsible for contacting blind date female youths, processing business visas, purchasing plane tickets, taking care of food, clothing, accommodation, transportation, organizing blind dates, weddings, and other matters after going abroad. After reaching an agreement, Mr. Li began to vigorously promote foreign-related matchmaking information on WeChat friends circle, Kwai and other platforms. Unmarried young man Wang has failed multiple blind dates and remained unmarried at the age of 35. Getting rid of the "single troubles" has become a concern for him and his family. After seeing the advertisement posted by Li, his heart was filled with joy. Wang felt that "conditions like mine are difficult to find locally, with a dowry of 200000 yuan, a car and a house, and marrying a foreign wife for only over 100000 yuan, which is very suitable." "I have never been abroad, and I was worried about being unreliable at first, but Li showed me a 'successful case', explained the process in detail, and promised to sign a contract. If unsuccessful, I would receive a full refund." Xiao Wang saw that Li had a business store and license, and heard Li's "guarantee", finally dispelled his concerns, and gladly paid a deposit of 15000 yuan. Then he went abroad for a blind date with Li, during which he also paid 85000 yuan to Li. However, Wang stayed in Pakistan for three to four months, and in the end, his wife did not bring her home and the money was not refunded. There are also Pan and Zhang who have the same situation as Wang. After trusting the so-called "guarantee", they signed a foreign blind date service contract with Li and then went to Pakistan for blind dates. In Pakistan, Zhou led them to handle the matters of joining the church and organized blind dates, as well as arranged for the payment of dowries, wedding arrangements, and other matters. The three of them paid a total of more than 370000 yuan. After the wedding, the bride only asked me for money to buy things, never mentioned to me about returning to China, and rarely met with me Wang gradually realized that something was wrong and felt cheated. The other two also noticed that there was a problem. Pan's marriage partner often went missing, and Zhang's "bride" family reported Zhou, Wang, Zhang, and others suspected of human trafficking. They were taken away by the local police for investigation, and Zhou was detained for several months. The money hasn't been refunded yet, and the person almost got in Speaking of this matter, Wang still has lingering fears. After returning to China, the three people repeatedly approached Li to request a full refund for fulfilling the contract, but most of the money had already been handed over to Zhou and the Pakistani bride. Li was unable to return the money and had no choice but to surrender to the public security organs. After Zhou returned to China, the public security organs arrested him. This case involves two countries, and it is difficult for foreign personnel to obtain evidence. Moreover, the payment of dowries is mostly in cash, and the ultimate destination of the money cannot be determined. It is difficult to obtain evidence and recover the stolen goods Liu Kuifen, the handling prosecutor and director of the First Prosecution Department of Xiajin County Procuratorate, introduced that although the defendant was sentenced, most of the losses suffered by several young men who had blind dates were not recovered. Liu Kuifen reminds that foreign marriage agencies are not allowed in China. According to the Notice of the General Office of the State Council on Strengthening the Management of Foreign Marriage Introduction, it is strictly prohibited to establish foreign marriage introduction agencies, and no one is allowed to engage in or engage in foreign marriage introduction activities for the purpose of profit. Fabricating false reasons for leaving the country makes it difficult to ensure personal safety, and cross-border marriages involve many issues. Improper handling can easily lead to foreign-related incidents. Faced with the increasing number of marriage scams, single young people must be vigilant, not hold unrealistic illusions, and resolutely prevent and resist such scams. (New Society)
