Georgian President: Continue to serve as president 'until a new parliament is legally elected'

Tbilisi News: Georgian President Zulabishvili delivered a video speech on the evening of November 30th, stating that she will continue to serve as president until a new parliament is legally elected. Zulabishvili said she will not resign, "because the parliament is illegal, illegal parliament cannot elect a new president, nor can it hold an inauguration ceremony. My task will continue until there is a legally elected parliament that can legitimately elect someone to replace me. Zulabishvili also said that through new elections, Georgia will return to the path of integration with the European Union. According to the Georgian Constitution, Zulabishvili's six-year term will expire on December 16th. On November 26th, the Georgian parliament passed a resolution to hold presidential elections on December 14th and the inauguration ceremony of the new president on December 29th. Georgia held a new parliamentary election on October 26th, with the Georgian Dream Party receiving over half of the votes. Four opposition alliances that also entered parliament refused to recognize the election results and demanded a new parliamentary election. Zurabishvili announced on October 27th that he would not recognize the results of the new parliamentary elections. On November 25th, the new parliament held its first meeting and officially began its work. On November 28th, Georgian Prime Minister Kobahidze announced after receiving a vote of confidence in parliament that the Georgian government will no longer consider opening the agenda for EU accession negotiations before 2028.
