Recently, the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government of Guangdong Province approved the Overall Plan for the Ecological Protection Zone of Cantonese Opera and Opera Culture (Liwan) (2021-2030), proposing to strive to build a demonstration zone for the ecological protection of Cantonese Opera and Opera culture that is rich in heritage, rich in atmosphere, distinctive in characteristics, and beneficial to the masses by 2030. The "Plan" divides the protected objects and contents of the Cantonese Opera and Opera Culture (Liwan) Ecological Protection Zone into five aspects: representative intangible cultural heritage projects, representative inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, cultural relics and objects related to intangible cultural heritage, folk activities, and cultural venues. According to the Plan, the protected area is divided into traditional core area, modern exhibition area, and inheritance and development area. The traditional core area will focus on the restoration, reconstruction, and revitalization of important Cantonese opera and opera venue sites and relics; The modern exhibition area will promote the active integration of Cantonese opera and Cantonese opera culture with related industries such as cultural and creative industries, tourism, etc., and accelerate the upgrading of the Cantonese opera and Cantonese opera cultural industry; The inheritance and development zone will improve the inheritance system, promote the integration of the protection of Cantonese opera and music culture with the daily life and folk activities of the people in Liwan, and implement life oriented protection. The Plan also proposes four protection methods: productive protection, salvage protection, classified protection, and digital protection, as well as nine protection measures including strengthening resource investigation and archive management, improving the intangible cultural heritage list system, and enhancing the protection of intangible cultural heritage inheritors.
