Scholz elected as German Social Democratic Party candidate for Chancellor
2024-11-26
The German Social Democratic Party announced on the 25th that current German Chancellor Scholz has been elected as the party's candidate for Chancellor and is running for re-election as the next Chancellor of the government. At a press conference held by the Social Democratic Party on the 25th, party leader Saskia Esken stated that Scholz was "unanimously nominated as the party's candidate for Chancellor" and is the "right person" in the current special situation in Germany, Europe, and the world. Recently, there have been serious disagreements within the ruling coalition led by Scholz, consisting of the Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, and the Green Party, on issues such as fiscal and tax policies. On November 6th, Scholz dismissed Christian Lindner, the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, from his position as Minister of Finance. On the same day, the Liberal Democratic Party announced its withdrawal from the government, leading to the breakdown of the three party ruling coalition. Scholz is scheduled to launch a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister in the Federal Parliament on December 16th. Due to the fact that the ruling parties, the Social Democratic Party and the Green Party, have less than half of the total seats, if they are unable to pass the vote of confidence, according to the German Basic Law, the Federal Parliament will be dissolved and a new election will be held within 60 days. Generally, the candidate nominated by the winning party will be appointed as the Prime Minister of the new government. The vote is expected to be held on February 23rd next year. According to local media reports, for the first time in Germany, there have been four candidates running for the position of Chancellor. In addition to Scholz, the other three candidates for Chancellor are Christian Democratic Union President Merz, current Vice Chancellor Habeck from the Green Party, and Chairman of the German Alternative Party Weider.
