India holds its first space defense exercise
2024-11-21
According to the Indian Ministry of Defense, India recently conducted its first space defense exercise. The Indian Ministry of Defense stated that space assets play a crucial role in modern warfare and face threats such as anti satellite weapons, cyber attacks, and space debris. This exercise can help India clarify its national space strategic goals and lay the foundation for the future use of space weapons in actual military operations. This exercise is led by the Indian Defense Space Agency, with participation from Indian land, sea, air force units, Defense Network Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, space research institutions, and others. The exercise includes multiple departments collaborating on the use of space assets and quickly addressing vulnerabilities in the event of satellite service interruptions. Indian Defense Chief of Staff Anil Chohan emphasized during the exercise that the Indian military, defense research and development organizations, space research organizations, and academic institutions should collaborate to promote cutting-edge technological innovation and development. It is reported that India conducted an anti satellite capability test in 2019, destroying an Indian satellite that had only been launched for two months in a low altitude orbit of 300 kilometers. The experiment has been heavily criticized by the United States, which accuses India of leaving debris in low Earth orbit that could endanger the safety of other spacecraft. (New Society)
