Intensify the 'de primary schoolization' of kindergartens and return childhood to children
2024-11-15
Recently, the 12th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress voted to pass the Law of the People's Republic of China on Preschool Education, which will come into force on June 1, 2025. In response to the widely concerned issue of "primary schoolization" in preschool education, the Preschool Education Law stipulates that kindergartens shall not adopt primary schoolization education methods and shall not teach courses at the primary school stage. Subsequently, the relevant person in charge of the Ministry of Education stated that they will thoroughly address the non-standard behavior of exceeding the curriculum in kindergartens and primary schools, and resolutely prevent and correct the trend of "primary schoolization" in preschool education. In fact, the "primary schoolization" of kindergarten not only refers to the "rush" in content, but also includes courses such as literacy, pinyin, speed calculation, and English in the kindergarten stage; This also includes the "primary schoolization" of teaching methods and environments, such as replacing games with classroom teaching, and replacing spontaneous exploration and interaction with one-way knowledge imparting. Regardless of the manifestation, the common problem behind it is the lack of respect for the physical and mental development characteristics of children, and excessive education seriously violates the laws of early childhood education, forcibly speeding up their development clock. From this perspective, the Preschool Education Law explicitly prohibits the "primary schoolization" of kindergartens, which is a care for childhood and a protection for the vulnerable group of young children. Why did kindergarten transform into elementary school? There are already too many studies indicating that advanced learning in early childhood education may help children stay ahead, but this competitive advantage is temporary and will quickly shrink over time until they align. However, for this, children have to pay a heavy price. Behind the hundreds or thousands of words that make parents proud, the proficiency in the four arithmetic operations, and the eloquence of ancient poetry, may be the children's diminishing enthusiasm for learning, increasingly impoverished desire for exploration and imagination, as well as their overburdened bodies. Therefore, for many years, education authorities have repeatedly prohibited kindergartens from teaching primary education content in advance. This also reflects the difficulty of "primary schoolization" governance in kindergartens from another perspective. The problem of "primary schoolization" in kindergarten lies not only within the kindergarten itself, but also within the kindergarten itself. For many parents who aspire for their children to succeed, their education serves as a "social alchemy" that carries the infinite expectations of the entire family and even the clan. The fierce competition in education, the subtle influence of intensive parenting culture, and the occasional "warning" that "we cannot afford to lose at the starting line" have made many parents resolutely choose to join the education arms race, and some kindergartens also promote themselves as "early learning". If the kindergarten cannot meet the intensity of "competition", parents will choose to purchase various educational consumer goods with clearly marked prices as supplements. Under the theatrical effect, "rushing to run" has become a choice for more families, "wanting to win" has become the core of childhood life, and "primary schoolization" has become a situation faced by many preschool children. The current preschool education law calls for a halt to the "primary schoolization" of kindergartens, breaking through the starting line of kindergartens and sending a clear and strong signal, which will help guide all parties to reverse the education concept of seeking quick success and instant benefits, and establish a correct education orientation. Relieving educational anxiety and guiding education back to its essence requires diverse governance to break through difficulties. The education regulatory authorities should strengthen dynamic monitoring, guide kindergartens to implement relevant guidelines and requirements, teach in accordance with the law, and provide good education for children. Parents also need to constantly change their parenting concepts, reduce blind faith and obedience, and plan their children's growth with the strategy and vision of running a marathon instead of a hundred meter race. More fundamentally, we must continue to promote balanced development of basic education, constantly narrow the gap in educational levels between schools, and deepen the reform of educational evaluation, making social and talent evaluation more diverse, inclusive, and three-dimensional, creating more tracks, and allowing every child to discover themselves and find a suitable path and rhythm for their own growth. Please listen carefully to the warning of the famous educator Dewey again: "They think childhood is completely wasted, how do they know that this is the true foundation of education." Let us form a joint force to educate people, correct the "primary schoolization" of kindergarten, return childhood to children, and consolidate the foundation of their lifelong development.
