2024-10-30

According to foreign media reports, the defense ministers of the UK and Germany recently signed a new defense agreement. The two countries will engage in systematic cooperation in defense fields such as land, sea, air, and cyber, enhancing military strength under the NATO framework and improving Europe's overall defense capabilities. According to the report, the agreement is called "Trinity House" and involves multiple defense fields, mainly including the following aspects. Strengthen cooperation in the defense industry. According to the agreement, Rheinmetall Defence UK will open a new factory to manufacture the Challenger 3 main battle tank gun barrels using local steel, in order to help the UK rebuild its manufacturing capabilities. The project will create over 400 job opportunities and generate nearly £ 500 million (approximately $640 million) in economic benefits for the UK over the next 10 years. At the same time, the agreement also promises to manufacture "Boxer" armored vehicles in the UK for a long time. It is reported that the British Army ordered 523 Boxer armored vehicles in 2019, including 11 different models. Improve long-range strike capability. According to reports, the UK and Germany will also jointly develop new long-range strike weapons. Although the agreement did not provide further details, analysis suggests that compared to the "Storm Shadow" air launched cruise missile used by the British Air Force, this weapon has a longer range and higher accuracy in attacking targets. Integrate missile defense systems. The agreement emphasizes the integration of European air defense systems. The report states that the new joint air defense system is likely to be developed based on the European Sky Shield initiative. Promote unmanned system projects. The agreement also mentions that the UK and Germany will jointly promote multiple unmanned system projects at the land, sea, and air service levels, which may involve Airbus' "Wingman" stealth wingman drone, Saab Group's Skeldar V-200 maritime drone, and unmanned ground vehicles. Ensure the security of NATO's eastern flank. Britain and Germany will increase their military forces in Eastern Europe, conduct joint military exercises at the forefront, enhance their collaborative combat capabilities, and jointly respond to regional conflict threats. Collaborate on underwater monitoring. The UK and Germany will also jointly protect and monitor key underwater infrastructure, especially submarine cables and natural gas pipelines. In addition, the German P-8 anti submarine patrol aircraft may take off regularly from the Royal Air Force base in Scotland from next year to carry out North Atlantic patrol missions, in order to enhance security in the area. This will be the first time in 25 years that Germany has deployed military aircraft in the UK. Britain, France, and Germany have signed defense cooperation agreements to maintain order and security in Europe. In 2010, the United Kingdom and France signed the Lancaster House Agreement; In 2019, France and Germany signed the Aachen Treaty. The UK Department of Defense stated that the signing of the "Trinity House" agreement has completed the triangular defense agreement between the three major military countries in Europe, marking a fundamental shift in the security relationship between the UK, Germany, and Europe, and will further promote the process of defense cooperation and integration among European countries.
