Airbus tests autonomous helicopter
2024-10-29
According to foreign media reports, Airbus US Aerospace Defense recently tested a transport type unmanned helicopter. This is part of the UH-72 "Lakota" transport helicopter project carried out by the company. According to the head of Airbus US Aerospace Defense, this unmanned helicopter, named UH-72 "Logistics Connector", is the product that the company is bidding for in the US Marine Corps' "Air Logistics Connector" project. The 'Air Logistics Connector' is a project of the US Department of Defense aimed at improving the logistics supply methods of the US military during high-intensity conflicts. Before testing, the crew seats inside the fuselage of this unmanned helicopter were removed, freeing up space for storing cargo. At present, Airbus US Aerospace Defense is conducting tests on the aircraft to ensure that standard cargo containers of the US Marine Corps can be smoothly loaded and unloaded on board. It is reported that Airbus US Aerospace Defense aims to make this unmanned helicopter achieve autonomous driving. Due to the absence of a cockpit, this unmanned helicopter can also utilize the nose space to store cargo. The nose of the helicopter can be flipped up to open, and this front loading function allows the aircraft to carry larger containers or equipment, which other helicopters cannot achieve. It is reported that this test will continue until the end of 2025. At that time, the US Marine Corps will decide whether to proceed with the plan. The goal of the US Marine Corps is to build a prototype for the "Air Logistics Connector" project between 2028 and 2029, and make a production decision by the end of 2029. (New Society)
