Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Global energy transition should have a 'world story' of solidarity and cooperation among countries

2024-10-24

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on the 23rd that the global energy transition should not only have a "Chinese story", but also a "world story" of solidarity and cooperation among countries. At the regular press conference that day, a reporter asked: Recently, the International Energy Agency released the 2024 World Energy Outlook and Renewable Energy Report, believing that the global energy market is entering the "electricity era" led by China, and China is driving the development and rise of global electric vehicles. Fatih Birol, Director General of the International Energy Agency, said that almost all energy stories in the world today are Chinese stories. However, at the same time, some media outlets such as Foreign Policy magazine believe that China's current energy transition plan is still conservative and that China can do more. What is the spokesperson's comment on this? Lin Jian stated that China has always attached great importance to addressing climate change, actively promoting green energy transformation and industrial restructuring. In the past 10 years, China's newly added clean energy power generation has accounted for more than half of the domestic electricity consumption increase, and the annual new installed capacity of renewable energy accounts for more than 40% of the global total. It has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by about 3 billion tons, making it one of the countries with the fastest reduction in energy intensity and the largest country in the use of renewable energy. He stated that China has established the world's largest carbon emissions trading market, cooperated with more than 100 countries and regions on green energy projects, and built a number of iconic hydropower, photovoltaic, and wind power projects in developing countries, without building new overseas coal-fired power projects. The "new three types" industries are rapidly developing in open competition, forming advanced green production capacity and making important contributions to the global energy transformation. Based on its national conditions and development stage, China coordinates and balances the promotion of energy transformation, cultivates and strengthens new quality productive forces, and achieves a virtuous cycle of high-quality economic and social development Lin Jian said that achieving the goal of global energy transition also requires joint efforts from all countries. Developed countries should fulfill their commitments and create favorable conditions for international green cooperation. Engaging in protectionism, unilateralism, and pan politicization will only harm the common interests of the international community. Lin Jian emphasized that the global energy transition should not only have a "Chinese story", but also a "world story" of solidarity and cooperation among countries. The Third Plenum of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has pointed out the direction for the future development of clean energy in China. We will continue to uphold the concept of ecological civilization, deepen international green cooperation with the international community, promote sustainable energy development in all countries, and make greater contributions to the global response to climate change and the green and low-carbon transformation of energy in China
