Li Jiachao: The SAR government needs to gather consensus for Hong Kong's economic transformation period
2024-10-23
On the 22nd, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam met with the media before attending the Executive Council and stated that Hong Kong is currently in a critical period of economic transformation. What the SAR government needs to do is to point out the direction, identify problems, propose methods, and consolidate social consensus and strength. Reform is not only the responsibility of the Special Administrative Region government, but also a task that the entire society must participate in and promote together. Li Jiachao recently released his third policy address during his term, titled "Together, Reform and Development Benefit the People and Build the Future". He stated that 2024 is a period when Hong Kong's security is guaranteed and full force is deployed, therefore his policy goal is to "reform and seek change, sail a thousand sails simultaneously, and unleash strength". The new policy address proposes various measures to expand and strengthen existing businesses and explore new growth points in the economy, including establishing an international gold trading market. Li Jiachao said that there are media reports that the London Metal Exchange is studying the inclusion of Hong Kong as a warehouse and settlement location, and believes that Hong Kong is a suitable location. Banks and the industry also support the establishment of an international gold trading market and world-class gold storage facilities, believing that it can greatly consolidate Hong Kong's position as an international financial center, shipping center, and trading center. Li Jiachao said that the SAR government attaches importance to building Hong Kong as an international hub of higher education, and continues to promote the brand of "studying in Hong Kong". He believes that Hong Kong is very attractive in terms of excellent university training. Some countries jointly building the "the Belt and Road" believe that Hong Kong can develop into a high-quality hub of higher education. For a period of time, several officials from the Special Administrative Region government have visited the Middle East and other places. Li Jiachao said that the purpose of the visit is to explore new markets, consolidate trade networks, and increase the potential and possibility of overall economic development. (New Society)
