For a long time, the interaction between high-level leaders of China and Uruguay has become increasingly frequent, and both sides have maintained good exchanges and profound friendship, which laid a solid foundation for the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries in 2016. It is reported that in 2018, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation on the "the Belt and Road" initiative, pointing out the direction for future cooperation; In 2022, China and Ukraine completed the feasibility study of a free trade agreement, marking the deepening of cooperation between the two countries in the field of economy and trade; In 2023, China and Ukraine established a comprehensive strategic partnership, further enhancing the height and breadth of cooperation between the two countries. In order to further promote mutual trust, mutual benefit, and cooperation between China and Uruguay, the Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou held a lecture entitled "Economic and Trade Relations between China and Uruguay" on the evening of October 21st. This event invited Julio Fernandez Techera, President of the Catholic University of Uruguay, and Professor Ignacio Bartesaghi, Director of the School of International Relations and an expert in Sino Ukrainian international relations, to have in-depth discussions with industry representatives and people from all walks of life in China and Ukraine on the development and changes of economic and trade relations between the two countries, as well as potential opportunities for future cooperation. Facundo Sim ó n Fernandez Guerra, Consul General of Uruguay in Guangzhou, stated in his speech that the relationship between China and Uruguay is very close, and the promotion of commerce is also very important for both countries. The Consulate General has been committed to various trade and cultural promotion activities between China and Ukraine. He hopes that the visit of President Fernandez of the Catholic University of Uruguay and his delegation can further promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in academic, educational, economic and trade fields. During his lecture, Uruguayan Consul General Facundo Sim ó n Fernandez Guerra delved into the economic and trade relations between China and Uruguay, emphasizing the complementarity between the two countries in the fields of trade and investment. He reviewed the frequent exchanges of high-level visits between China and Uzbekistan in recent years, as well as the progress made by both sides under the "the Belt and Road" initiative, including the signing of the comprehensive strategic partnership and the feasibility study of the free trade agreement. He pointed out that with the diversification of trade commodities, Uruguay hopes to expand cooperation with China, especially in the export of high value-added products and services. Uruguay has always held a positive attitude towards free trade agreements and looks forward to launching relevant negotiations with China as soon as possible to promote further economic integration between the two countries. He also called for more business associations and enterprises to establish contacts between the two countries to promote further development of bilateral relations and push China Ukraine friendly cooperation to new heights. After the lecture, Principal Fernandez told Xinhua News Agency reporters that this was his first time in China and he was surprised by the country's development speed. At the same time, it was also a trip to further understand China. The Catholic University of Uruguay recently signed a cooperation agreement with the Macau University of Science and Technology, as well as with some universities in Guangzhou. He hopes to establish connections with more Chinese universities during this visit and steadily promote more cooperation in the future, such as exploring exchange programs between students and faculty, and exploring possibilities for cooperation in research. He believes that "China is one of the most important countries in the world. For Uruguay, establishing close relations with China is particularly important." He also warmly welcomes and hopes that more Chinese students will come to Uruguay for exchange and learning. Julio Fernandez Techera, President of the Catholic University of Uruguay, is an expert in studying international relations between China and Uruguay. Professor Ignacio has visited China multiple times in the past 15 years, but he told Xinhua News Agency reporters that this visit to the new city is of great significance. In the past, he mainly visited Beijing and Shanghai, but in recent years, the South China region has shown strong vitality, and the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has made him realize that there are very broad opportunities and development potential here. During his stay in Guangdong, he visited automobile companies located in Shenzhen and gained a deep understanding of China's current technological development, which left a deep impression on him. He pointed out that Uruguay attaches great importance to its relationship with China and regards it as a major partner for cooperation. The complementarity of products between China and Uruguay is significant, and both countries have their own unique resources. The commercial potential between China and Uruguay is enormous. In the past 20 years, bilateral trade has diversified and cooperation has become increasingly close. In the past, Uruguay mainly exported wool and primary animal and plant wool products to China, but with the deepening of trade, Uruguay's exports to China have gradually diversified, including pulp and other commodities. From primary agricultural products to high-tech and industrial products today, this type of economic and trade cooperation has significant development prospects for both China and Uruguay. Professor Ignacio stated that for Uruguay, firstly, they hope to increase the value of their products by expanding trade in high value-added products, such as food processing; Secondly, Uruguay hopes to export services and further strengthen the connection between China and the Latin American market; In addition, the importance of tourism to Uruguay is self-evident. He emphasized that attracting Chinese tourists to Uruguay for tourism is the key to future development, and both sides can strengthen understanding and communication in this regard. Ignacio Bartesaghi, Director of the School of International Relations at the Catholic University of Uruguay and an expert in Sino Ukrainian international relations, believes that promoting the signing of a free trade agreement between the two countries will provide new opportunities for cooperation. Uruguay holds a very positive attitude towards cooperation with China and is the first member of the Southern Common Market to hope to open a free trade agreement with China. Uruguay has already sent a positive signal to China, stating that "we hope to become a 'pioneer' and further promote cooperation between China and the member countries of the Southern Common Market, as well as between China and Latin American countries, through cooperation between China and Uruguay." Professor Ignacio also added that Uruguay will continue to support China's projects globally, hoping to integrate into the Chinese economic chain in the future and become a close friend of China. If you have good relationships, you can be friends for thousands of miles. China and Ukraine are building a bridge of friendship across mountains and seas. Through friendly exchanges at all levels, China and Uzbekistan and their people have a clearer understanding of the current status of cooperation and potential opportunities in the future. China and Uzbekistan have shown broad prospects for cooperation in trade, investment, cultural exchanges and other aspects. Under the guidance of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Ukraine, the two countries will continue to work together to explore new cooperation models, promote the development of bilateral relations to a higher level, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, inject strong impetus into China Latin America cooperation, and open a new chapter of friendly cooperation.
