Papers should also 'ride on hot topics' and mention that AI will increase citation rates

2024-10-22

With the popularization of artificial intelligence (AI), more and more researchers are starting to use AI tools. A recent study published in the journal Nature Human Behavior in the UK found that research papers that mention AI have higher citation rates compared to those that do not mention AI. Researchers from institutions such as Northwestern University in the United States analyzed approximately 75 million papers published between 1960 and 2019, covering 19 disciplines. It was found that papers with AI terms such as "machine learning" and "deep neural networks" mentioned in their titles or abstracts are more likely to rank among the top 5% of most cited papers in their respective fields, and often receive more citations in other fields as well. The study also found that in the past 20 years, researchers from 19 disciplines involved in the institute have strengthened their use of AI tools, but there are significant differences. Computer science, mathematics, and engineering have the highest usage rates, while history, art, and political science have the lowest usage rates. Geology, physics, chemistry, and biology have usage rates between the two. This study provides a quantitative analysis of how AI is changing scientific research. However, due to the deadline of the survey, this study did not capture the latest developments in AI, such as how large language models like ChatGPT have changed the way some researchers conduct research. The research findings have also raised concerns. Lisa Messeri, an associate professor of anthropology at Yale University who focuses on the field of technology, expressed concern that some researchers may misuse AI tools to increase paper citation rates.
