British Columbia, Canada holds provincial elections, with multiple Chinese individuals winning seats in the provincial legislature
2024-10-21
In the provincial elections held on October 19th in British Columbia, western Canada, several Chinese candidates won and will become provincial councilors. However, preliminary vote counting shows that the two major rival parties, the New Democratic Party and the Conservative Party, have too close a vote count, and the ownership of governance is still uncertain. This election has made adjustments to the electoral districts, increasing the number of seats in the provincial council from 87 to 93. This means that the participating political parties need to win 47 seats to qualify for forming a majority government. The New Democratic Party of British Columbia, which has a center left political spectrum, has been in power in the province for seven consecutive years. In this election, the rising center right Conservative Party in British Columbia poses a serious challenge to the New Democratic Party. From the invoicing situation, the two parties are generally in a state of competition. Preliminary official statistics show that the New Democratic Party leads with 44.6% of the total votes in 46 constituencies, while the Conservative Party leads with 43.57% of the total votes in 45 constituencies. Neither party has a majority of seats. Two more seats were won by the Green Party. The two major parties are evenly matched in multiple constituencies. The British Columbia Electoral Commission announced on the 20th that due to the difference in votes between the top two candidates in two constituencies being less than 100 votes, a recount is required. At present, the preliminary vote counting results in these two constituencies show that the new Democratic candidate leads the Conservative opponent by a very narrow margin. The British Columbia Electoral Affairs Bureau stated that the final vote count results are expected to be released between October 26th and 28th. Preliminary vote counting also shows that 7 Chinese candidates have won their respective constituencies, and the voting results should be uncontroversial, including newly elected Democratic Party candidates Zhou Jionghua, Kang Anli, Ma Bowen, and Conservative Party candidate Qu Jiebing. Two new Democratic candidates and one conservative candidate will become the new faces of Chinese in the provincial council. From a map perspective, the New Democratic Party has an advantage in the metropolitan areas along the Pacific Ocean in southern British Columbia, including Vancouver and the provincial capital Victoria, while large areas in the interior and north have become the Conservative Party's sphere of influence. New Democratic Party leader David Eby and Conservative Party leader John Rustad both won their respective constituencies smoothly. But Sonia Furstenau, the female leader of the Green Party who changed her constituency, lost her seat. Independent candidates were completely defeated. However, if it is ultimately determined that neither the New Democratic Party nor the Conservative Party has won a majority of seats, the Green Party's two seats are enough to become a "key minority" that will shape the future political situation. The situation of this British Columbia election is quite similar to the 2017 provincial election. At that time, the previously ruling British Columbia Liberal Party did not gain a majority of seats, and its minority government only lasted for a short period of time before being overthrown by the New Democratic Party and the Green Party, ending the Liberal Party's 16 year continuous rule in the province. The New Democratic Party launched early elections in 2020 and won a majority of seats, reversing its situation of holding a minority government. (New Society)
