"In the past excavation of the Bairen City site, a small scale of road remains were found, and this is the first large-scale exposure of the main road of the Bairen City." On the 11th, Wang Ziqi, deputy director and associate professor of the Department of Archaeology, Culture and Museum, School of History, Renmin University of China, was conducting archaeological excavation work at the Bairen City site. As a national key cultural relic protection unit, the Bairen City Site is located in Longyao County, Xingtai City, Hebei Province, covering an area of 4 million square meters. It is one of the well preserved ancient medium-sized cities in China. During the Warring States period, Bairen City was the second largest city in the state of Zhao. In the Tang Dynasty, the city was abandoned due to flooding. Due to its abandonment in floods, the relics and artifacts accumulated underground have not been greatly damaged, making it a rare physical specimen for studying and verifying ancient cities Wang Ziqi said that a main road with a width of about 40 meters and a north-south direction has been excavated, and there are a large number of ruts on the road surface, which shows the prosperity of the city at that time. From the cross-section observation, the thickest roadbed reaches about 1 meter, divided into multiple stages and lasting for a long time Wang Ziqi said that this thickness is also relatively thick in other archaeological excavations of the same period, indicating that this road has been in use for a long time, the road quality is good, and there are many passing vehicles. It is reported that the site has been excavated four times in 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2023. In the third and fourth excavations, a large number of Han Dynasty relics were found in the six layer accumulation, indicating that the Han Dynasty was a prosperous period for Bairen City. Wang Ziqi said that based on the fifth excavation, it is preliminarily judged that the road was used until the Han Dynasty and was abandoned thereafter. The specific construction and usage time need to be further excavated and studied to determine. This discovery is of great significance for further exploring the urban layout and site changes of Bairen City. (New Society)
