2024-10-11

In recent years, mental health, especially among the adolescent population, has received increasing attention and importance. Sports not only improve the physical fitness and promote physical health of young people, but are also closely related to their mental health. Why can sports regulate psychological states? How do sports affect emotions? What are the differences between different types of sports? The reporter interviewed Yin Li, Chief Physician of the Mental Health Center at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Yin Li introduced that scientific research has shown that physical exercise can stimulate the muscle state and brain of adolescents, activate emotions, and ultimately build a virtuous cycle in the human nervous system, motor system, and endocrine system. Participating in sports has a positive promoting effect on mental health. Exercise can not only stimulate and promote cognitive abilities and reaction speed in adolescents, but also stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine in the body, enhance emotional states, and thus have a positive impact on psychology. During exercise, the secretion of adrenaline continues to increase, which can also help alleviate depressive emotions. Engaging in sports activities among teenagers can help cultivate a sense of teamwork and responsibility. Through sports, children can learn to face difficulties, form healthier lifestyles and positive attitudes towards life, which is a great exercise for their willpower and stress resistance. Choosing the appropriate form of exercise is also important, as different types of exercise have varying impacts on the mental health of adolescents. Aerobic exercise can improve mood and emotions, while strength training can enhance self-confidence. Running, swimming, cycling, and other endurance exercises can improve people's cardiovascular function. Exercising for more than 30 minutes each time can effectively enhance physical fitness and mental health. Team sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, etc. can help teenagers gain more social support and emotional connections. Competitive and confrontational sports can enhance the adaptability and stress resistance of teenagers. The regulatory effect of sports varies in the face of different negative emotions. When feeling anxious, one can choose stress reducing exercises such as yoga and swimming to relax muscles and help calm the nervous system; When feeling angry and anxious, one can choose sports exercises with strong consumption and slightly faster pace, including badminton, table tennis, etc; When feeling depressed and pessimistic, participating in group sports such as running and other aerobic exercises can effectively alleviate the state of adolescence. It is worth noting that excessive exercise is not always better, so it is important to control the frequency and timing of physical activity. Teenagers exercise three to five times a week, with each session lasting about 45 minutes, which is more suitable. (New Society)
