The Hong Kong Customs held a press conference on the 9th, saying that in September, the Hong Kong Customs cracked a major drug trafficking case, seized about 500 kilograms of suspected Fried Dough Twists, with a market value of 130 million Hong Kong dollars, and arrested three people. Wang Jixiang, commander of the cargo information research team of Hong Kong Customs Port and Marine Department, said that through risk assessment and intelligence analysis, customs officers had previously locked a container from Canada, claiming to contain more than 500 bags of soybeans, and found that the shipper was an overseas clothing company, which had nothing to do with the nature of the goods. Moreover, some regions in North America have legalized marijuana, allowing criminals to smuggle drugs to Hong Kong under the guise of food. Therefore, customs officers have detained this batch of goods for investigation. The investigation found that the nylon bags used to package "soybeans" varied in size, and some were suspected to contain other items. When customs officers opened them, they found several packages of vacuum packed herbaceous plants hidden inside. After testing, it was confirmed that they tested positive for marijuana. Finally, customs officers found 83 packages of suspected Fried Dough Twists, weighing about 500 kg, in the whole batch of goods. The commander of the drug investigation team of the Hong Kong Customs Drug Investigation Bureau, Tsang Kin bong, stated that this case is the second major case involving cannabis drugs solved by the customs this year, successfully intercepting a large amount of drugs from entering the Hong Kong market and dealing a heavy blow to the involved drug trafficking group. Zeng Jianbang said that from January to September this year, Hong Kong Customs has successfully seized about 2600 kilograms of cannabis drugs with a market value of HKD 540 million. The number of seizures has increased by more than 80% compared to the same period last year and also exceeded the total amount for the whole year last year. (New Society)
