Tanzanian Navy Captain Wangia: Let the sunshine of peace illuminate more corners of the world

I first got to know China from middle school history textbooks. The world-famous Great Wall, located in the northern region of China, is the longest and largest ancient military defense project in China and the world. This great project, which can resist foreign aggression and symbolize peace, has made me increasingly curious about China, this Eastern country. With time and time again establishing ties with China, I constantly feel the country's relentless pursuit of peace on the path to modernization. In 2017, the Chinese Navy's Peace Ark Hospital ship arrived in Tanzania. For a week, Chinese military doctors were busy every day diagnosing, distributing drugs, and performing surgeries for Tanzanian patients for free. At that time, I was serving on a naval vessel and my deputy captain was troubled by eye disease for a long time. After treatment by Chinese military doctors, he quickly recovered. This hospital ship named after "Peace" has brought health to the Tanzanian people, and also made us feel the sincerity and kindness of the Chinese people. Later, due to work reasons, I often came into contact with people from different countries. I have worked with personnel from multiple international organizations, including the United Nations, and have also attended training in European countries. These experiences have made me intuitively feel that different countries have different views and actions on hot issues and resolving crises and conflicts. Unlike those countries that only talk about 'peace', China promotes world peace and stability through concrete actions. China is the backbone of UN peacekeeping operations, not only the country that dispatches the most peacekeeping personnel among the permanent members of the Security Council, but also the second largest contributor to UN peacekeeping contributions. In the Ukrainian crisis, China persistently advocated for peace talks; In the hot issues in the Middle East, China has taken the lead in promoting reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In maintaining world peace, China has shown the image of a responsible major country. During my study at the PLA Naval Engineering University, I had a deeper understanding of China's adherence to the path of peaceful development. The school once organized us to visit and learn from the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China Memorial Hall, the August 7th Conference Site Memorial Hall, the Zunyi Conference Memorial Hall, and other places. The exhibition hall clearly records the history of modern China in pictures, cultural relics and texts, which is also the reason why the Chinese people cherish peaceful and happy life more. Today's China is built on a foundation of peaceful development, with a dense high-speed rail network, mobile payments that scan QR codes and scan faces, and high-quality and reliable medical insurance. As I learn more and more about China, its image of peace loving, friendly and approachable has become increasingly clear. However, many people's understanding of China is not complete and sufficient, as there are few media organizations in Africa that specialize in reporting international news, and there is a lack of independently controlled social media platforms. The vast majority of the world perceived by the public is described by Western media. These media often convey a voice that 'the development of China's military power threatens world peace'. But I don't agree with this, this argument only reflects the Western thinking logic. China, which deeply understands that peace is hard won, does not have the genes of aggression against other countries, but rather the belief in maintaining peace. Recently, the Chinese Navy's Peace Ark Hospital ship, which is carrying out the "Harmony Mission-2024" mission, visited my motherland again. I firmly believe that through increasing contact with China, more people will realize that the Chinese nation is a peace loving nation, and China hopes that the sunshine of peace can illuminate more corners of the world.
