2024-10-09
The Director of the New York Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Dhanapala, recently stated in a written interview with Xinhua News Agency that the international community must maintain the momentum of global solidarity and ensure that refugees are not left behind in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for all. According to data from the UNHCR, due to wars, conflicts, and other reasons, more and more people have been forced to flee their homes in recent years. Currently, over 120 million people worldwide are displaced, and the refugee crisis has become a global crisis. Dhanapala said that the world must demonstrate the political will to resolve conflicts and address the root causes of forced displacement. He believes that innocent people are paying a heavy price. Since the beginning of this year, crises such as the Ukraine crisis and the Gaza conflict have attracted widespread attention from the international community, but many other crises have failed to make headlines. Dhanapala emphasized the need to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for all and ensure that refugees are not left behind. The international community must maintain unity and bring positive change to all those forced to flee their homes. At the same time, the UN Refugee Agency urgently needs more funds to address the growing needs of displaced persons worldwide. The "Future Compact" adopted at the recent United Nations Future Summit reaffirmed the obligations under international law, including refugee law, and decided to take concrete and practical measures to protect all civilians in armed conflicts. Dhanapala stated that future summits should not only examine the current situation, but also commit to resolving these crises. Dhanapala said that in response to the refugee crisis, in addition to obvious solutions such as ending conflicts and creating a peaceful environment for people to return home, the UNHCR has also made attempts in other areas. For example, countries such as Brazil and Colombia have attempted to integrate refugees into their local job markets, while Kenya plans to transform refugee camps into integrated municipal communities. These measures can bring a win-win situation for refugees and host countries, improve local economies, enable refugees to become contributors in host communities, enable refugees with specialized skills to better integrate into host countries, and ultimately contribute to national development after returning to their countries of origin. Former UNHCR representative in China, Dhanapala, stated that in recent years, China has cooperated with UNHCR through the Global Development and South South Cooperation Fund to provide support for displaced persons in Afghanistan, Angola, and other places. Chinese companies sign agreements with the UNHCR to support solar and sports projects for refugees. More and more young Chinese professionals are joining the UNHCR through government supported programs. Chinese college graduates, with their skills and enthusiasm, are helping the UNHCR find solutions for displaced persons, which is a remarkable contribution. (New Society)
