Observation of the construction of a world-class corridor for a thousand year old "flower blooming" archaeological site in Henan Province
2024-09-23
From a space perspective, Henan is half mountainous and half fertile. As a major province of cultural relics, Henan has the highest concentration of major archaeological sites in China. As of now, 17 national archaeological site parks have been listed or approved, ranking first in the country in terms of total number. Great sites witness great civilizations and participate in great changes. The great ruins represented by Yangshao Village in Sanmenxia, Erlitou in Luoyang, Yanshi Shopping Mall, Luoyang City in Han and Wei Dynasties, Luoyang City in Sui and Tang Dynasties, Zhengzhou Shopping Mall, Dahe Village in Zhengzhou, Yin Xu in Anyang, etc., like a civilization corridor, extend over the years, connecting the origin and development of Chinese civilization, and also making the historical axis of Chinese civilization continuously lengthened and its historical credibility constantly enhanced. As early as December 2021, the Henan Provincial Party Committee explicitly proposed the construction of a world-class heritage park corridor from Sanmenxia to Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, and Anyang in the "Implementation Plan for the Integration of Culture, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity". In September 2023, Henan Province issued another document proposing to build a strong province for cultural relics and archaeology, promote the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics, strengthen the protection and utilization of major sites, and create a world-class corridor for major sites. This is a civilized 'corridor'. A series of new archaeological discoveries constantly refresh people's understanding of the origins of agriculture, civilization, nation, and city, outlining the core historical picture of the origin, formation, development, and prosperity of Chinese civilization, allowing people to survey the 5000 year history of civilization in the vast corridor of time and space. This is also a 'big corridor' that integrates protection and development. A series of innovative measures have led to a harmonious coexistence between ancient ruins and modern urban culture. Cultural heritage protection and economic and social development promote each other, and the achievements of cultural heritage protection and utilization are shared by the whole nation. The organic combination of history, ecology, and life has become a new normal in many parts of Henan. Nowadays, this "big corridor" is shining with stars, and the "diverse" archaeological coordinates are becoming "scenic landmarks" of the city, interpreting the story of thousands of years of continuous fireworks and cultural heritage. The book "Shovel" depicts the latitude and longitude of Chinese civilization in early autumn. The Yangshao Village National Archaeological Site Park has a serene environment, with red background and black patterns on painted pottery and huge archaeological hand shovel sculptures integrating history and reality. Strolling along the trail, it feels like 7000 years have passed: the Yangshao ancestors built settlements on river valley terraces, lived in houses made of mud and grass, and engaged in farming, animal husbandry, hunting, pottery making, stone grinding, and other work... In October 1921, the first official archaeological excavation of the Yangshao Village site marked the birth of modern Chinese archaeology. With the excavation of beautiful, ancient, and brightly patterned painted pottery, a splendid picture of prehistoric civilization dating back 5000 to 7000 years is gradually unfolding before the world. Starting from this, over the course of more than a hundred years, generations of archaeologists have been exploring the Central Plains, accumulating the bloodline and bones of Chinese civilization through key sites. About 7000 years ago, the ancestors of the Yangshao Village site in Sanmenxia began a splendid pottery civilization, and primitive agriculture, mainly based on millet, gradually matured, leading to a relatively stable settled life; About 5300 years ago, the ancestors of the Shuanghuai Tree Site in Zhengzhou observed astronomy and engaged in agriculture, building the "ancient kingdom of Heluo" with a triple moat; More than 3700 years ago, China's first dynasty recorded in historical records established its capital at the Erlitou site. Since then, it has become a capital of great splendor and prestige. From Yangshao culture to Longshan culture, from Gongyi double locust tree, Yanshi Erlitou to Yin Xu in Anyang... The large sites scattered on the Central Plains have witnessed the splendor of early Chinese civilization, the long history of Shang and Zhou Dynasties, the prosperity of Han and Tang Dynasties, and the elegance of Song Dynasty. They have written the most brilliant chapter of ancient Chinese civilization, allowing people to have a deep understanding of the development process of Chinese civilization from trickle to river confluence. In December 2021, the Henan Provincial Party Committee proposed the construction of a world-class heritage park corridor from Sanmenxia to Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, and Anyang. In the same month, the "Notice of the People's Government of Henan Province on Issuing the 14th Five Year Plan for the Integrated Development of Culture and Tourism in Henan Province" once again emphasized this concept. Huang Dongsheng, Secretary of the Party Group and Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Henan Province, introduced that Henan is the province with the most dense distribution of major sites in China, and also the province with the most significant achievements in the protection of major sites and the construction of archaeological sites parks. In recent years, Henan has coordinated the construction of a world-class corridor for the protection of major sites, continuously creating a continuous exploration, demonstration, and experience site for Chinese civilization. In September 2023, Henan Province issued the "Implementation Opinions on Further Promoting the High quality Development of Cultural Relics", proposing to build a strong province for cultural relics and archaeology, promote the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics, strengthen the protection and utilization of large sites, create a world-class corridor for large sites, and make the coordinated promotion of the construction of world-class corridor for the protection of large sites and national museum clusters a key task in 2024. Nowadays, the world-class corridor of "one core, two poles, and multiple points" has begun to take shape: "One core" is the park group surrounding the Songshan Great Site, mainly including the Erlitou Site, Yanshi Shangcheng Site, Han Wei Luoyang Ancient City, Sui Tang Luoyang City Site, Zheng Han Ancient City, Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty Site, Songling, Northern Song Dongjing City Site, etc; The "two poles" refer to the core areas of Yangshao culture (Sanmenxia) and Yin Shang civilization (Anyang); It also includes several major sites such as Gongyi Shuanghuai Tree, Dengfeng Wangchenggang, Xinmi Lijiagou Guchengzhai Xinzhai, etc. The 'greatness' of a great site not only refers to its large area, but also directly witnesses the' historical site 'of our long civilization. It is also an important resource for the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional Chinese culture, which makes us ponder where it comes from and where it is going Ren Wei, Director of the Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, said. For many years, Henan has been continuously conducting research in the fields of Yangshao culture, Xia culture, and Shang culture, deeply implementing the Chinese Civilization Exploration Project and the major project of "Archaeology of China", and continuously achieving significant breakthroughs. Various archaeological units in Henan have conducted more than 120 archaeological excavations on major sites such as the Sui and Tang Dynasty Luoyang City Site, the Han and Wei Dynasty Luoyang Ancient City, the Yin Ruins, the Erlitou Site, and the Northern Song Dynasty Dongjing City Site. More than 30 archaeological excavation reports related to major sites have been published one after another. On this corridor of civilization, archaeologists keep digging and tracing civilization, with new achievements emerging one after another and historical details constantly enriched. Not long ago, a new breakthrough was made in the archaeological work of the Yangshao Village site in Sanmenxia. The first release of ancient genome data shows that the ancient people of Yangshao Village, who lived about 7000 years ago, made important genetic contributions to the formation of the Chinese nation. Although the Yangshao Village site occupies a very important position in the history of Chinese archaeology and Yangshao culture research, we previously knew very little about the origin history of the ancient population in Yangshao Village and its contribution to the Chinese nation Wei Xingtao, Vice President of Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said that the latest research has filled some gaps in the ancient genome data of the population in the middle reaches of the Yellow River during the Neolithic period, and plays an important role in understanding the history of the population in the middle reaches of the Yellow River during the Neolithic period and the origin and dissemination of Chinese civilization. Cohesion continued to guard Xiaotun Village of Yin Xu in Anyang after the autumnal equinox of the "origin and vitality" of the cultural context. The summer spirit has not completely faded away. In the morning, 65 year old He Yongxian went out to start his daily work. As the secretary of the Xiaotun Village Party Branch and a full-time cultural security officer, this native of Xiaotun conducts almost daily inspections of key areas and promptly handles and reports issues. At present, the Yin Ruins Management Committee has divided the 66 villages within its jurisdiction into 178 fourth level grids, and has established more than 360 Yin Ruins security guards, including patrol members and village (community) cadres. He Yongxian is one of them. In addition to this four level "civil defense" protection network that goes deep into rural areas, the local area has also built a 24-hour fully covered electronic monitoring network. Entering the monitoring hall of the Yin Ruins Technical Defense Monitoring Center, 2650 high-definition cameras operate around the clock, providing a panoramic view of the 29.47 square kilometer Yin Ruins protection area. Always putting protection first "is the conscious and responsible attitude of the province of cultural relics. In recent years, Henan has firmly established the concept of "protection first" and taken the lead in implementing the "archaeological pre construction" reform nationwide, placing archaeology before "excavation" and continuously weaving a dense safety protection net for large archaeological sites. There are numerous large archaeological sites in Henan province, characterized by concentrated and continuous periods, rich connotations, diverse forms, overlapping ancient and modern cities, and deep burial underground. Compared with other forms of historical and cultural heritage, the protection of large archaeological sites has always been difficult and costly Ren Wei said. To this end, various regions in Henan Province are actively exploring and gradually forging a path to coordinate cultural heritage protection with urban and rural construction, economic development, and tourism development. Zhengzhou focuses on protection, moderate greening, and actively promotes the "ecological heritage preservation" model of protecting large archaeological sites; Combining urban planning, Luoyang has developed the "Luoyang model" of building a new city away from the old city; Anyang has developed the "Yin Ruins Model" of complementary advantages and shared benefits in the construction of archaeological museums; Kaifeng adheres to the concept of "developing while protecting and protecting while developing", and continuously improves the legal system for cultural relic protection around above ground cultural heritage and underground cultural relics. Entering the Yuanling Ancient City Ruins Park in Zhengzhou Airport Port Area, a majestic and imaginative Qin and Han style tower stands out, with lush greenery and lively visitors. The ancient ruins have become a harmonious landscape in modern life. As the first completed project after the implementation of the Zhengzhou Ecological Heritage Protection Project, Yuanling Ancient City Ruins Park is an example of promoting the organic integration of cultural heritage protection and ecological civilization construction. As of now, Zhengzhou has built 51 open site ecological and cultural parks, covering an ecological greening area of 50000 acres. They have played an important role in inheriting cultural heritage, serving society, optimizing the environment, and driving development. Standing on the north side of the Dingdingmen City Tower in Luoyang, the Tian Street, which served as the axis of the Sui and Tang dynasties in Luoyang, is grand and magnificent, dotted with lush green plants. At the nearby study camp, many tourists dressed in Hanfu experience activities such as tea drinking, intangible cultural heritage, handicrafts, etc., feeling the surging cultural heritage of the millennium ancient capital. For the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, Luoyang, the scattered large ruins are valuable assets and significant tests. In recent years, Luoyang has taken measures such as "avoiding the old city and building a new city" and "archaeology first, construction later", exploring methods such as planning guidance, scientific archaeology, and one site one strategy, while protecting cultural relics, allowing cultural relics to "walk" from underground to above ground, and revitalizing large sites. The laws and regulations for the protection of large archaeological sites are becoming increasingly perfect. In order to provide long-term and systematic legal protection for the protection of relevant large sites, in recent years, Henan Province has promoted the promulgation of nine local regulations and policies for the protection of large sites, including the Regulations on the Protection of Luoyang's Han and Wei Dynasty Old City, the Regulations on the Protection and Management of Yin Xu in Anyang, the Measures for the Protection and Management of Song Tombs, and the Regulations on the Protection of Erlitou Site in Luoyang. Since the ancient city of Kaifeng exercised its local legislative power, it has successively promulgated and implemented the "Kaifeng City Cultural Relics Protection Regulations" and "Kaifeng Ancient City Protection Regulations", which, together with the previously approved "Kaifeng City Wall Protection Regulations", have formed the "three carriages", providing legal and regulatory basis for the protection and utilization of the ancient city and cultural relics. "At present, the protection plan for more than 20 major sites in the province has been completed, and has been approved by the National Cutural Heritage Administration, which was announced by the People's Government of Henan Province. The preparation, approval, and publication of these protection plans overall ensure the standardization and scientificity of the protection work of Henan's major archaeological sites He Junfeng, Director of the Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology Department of Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, said. The protection project for large archaeological sites is also steadily advancing. In recent years, Henan has implemented more than 190 major site protection, exhibition and utilization, and environmental protection measures
