Little Student Card witnesses the integration of education in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau

2024-09-20

Starting in September this year, Jiajia from Hong Kong became one of the new students in the second year of high school at Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong Macau Children's School (hereinafter referred to as "ASJ"), and a student card symbolizing her status as a current student was issued to her. Jiajia will spend the next two years of her high school life in this Hong Kong Macau children's school located in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macau Greater Bay Area. Education, as one of the major livelihood issues, almost affects every family. The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area clearly proposes to build schools for Hong Kong and Macao children or establish classes for Hong Kong and Macao children in Guangdong and provide boarding services. With the continuous promotion of the integrated development of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, in recent years, Guangdong and Guangzhou have successively introduced a series of supporting policies and measures to facilitate the work and life of Hong Kong and Macao youth in Guangdong, among which supporting the development of schools and classes for Hong Kong and Macao children has become one of the important policies. Behind the seemingly ordinary student cards, such as school name, name, and student ID, are not only vivid stories of Hong Kong and Macao children studying in Guangzhou, but also vivid practices of Guangzhou actively implementing national pilot policies and promoting the integration of education services in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao. Convenient access to education has become a popular choice for Hong Kong and Macao students studying in mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area. On the morning of September 2nd at 7:45 am, Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macao Children's School welcomed the start of school. Students lined up in an orderly manner at the card swiping machine at the school gate, waiting to swipe their student cards to enter the campus. In recent years, Guangzhou has successively established three schools for Hong Kong and Macao children, namely Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macao Children's School, Guangzhou Nansha Minxin Hong Kong and Macao Children's School, and Guangzhou Zhonghuang Hong Kong and Macao Children's School. Hong Kong and Macao children's schools in Dongguan, Foshan and other places have also been established. Studying in mainland cities of the Greater Bay Area has become a popular choice for Hong Kong and Macau students to pursue further education. Ms. Zhou, the mother of Hong Kong student Jia Jia, has a strong voice when it comes to her connection with Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macau Children's School. This summer, Jia Jia, who was originally studying in the second year of high school in Hong Kong, wanted to transfer from the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) program. However, she faced the situation that the local top tier schools generally do not accept high school transfer students. Later, it was learned that the high school DSE curriculum design of Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macao Children's School was highly benchmarked against Hong Kong, and after on-site inspections, the mother and daughter were "recruited" by this first Hong Kong and Macao children's school in China, which was established in 2021. Therefore, Jiajia registered to participate in the school's entrance examination. The school is big and beautiful, and the curriculum design also meets our needs Ms. Zhou learned that the school has also integrated mainland characteristics in teaching and management methods. For example, each class has a contact group for teachers and parents, which facilitates timely communication of students' school situation. On the student card displayed by Jiajia, basic information such as name, student ID, and whether or not they are a day student is printed. In addition, the card also uses traditional Chinese characters and English. In terms of promoting the connection of educational rules and mechanisms, the school has also been approved as a DSE "matching school" and enjoys the "Principal Recommendation Program". Students from the school can apply to 138 universities in mainland China or universities in Hong Kong and overseas based on their Hong Kong DSE exam scores. This is of great benefit to children's future exams and further education. "At the school, the primary and junior high school departments practice the Hong Kong Macau integration curriculum, with the Hong Kong curriculum as the core and in line with international curriculum, integrating into mainland curriculum and national education, with" two languages and three languages "as the main teaching feature. In high school, the" International+"curriculum model is implemented, mainly offering DSE courses to safeguard students' further education. What surprised Ms. Zhou even more was that relevant personnel from the Baptist Lv Mingcai Middle School, where Jia Jia had studied, also came to the school for exchange. According to the principal of the school, Tan Rixu, their school has previously formed sister schools with multiple primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Macao, and maintained close interaction. Our students not only need to have a deep understanding of Hong Kong and Macao culture, but also have a global perspective, "said Tan Rixu. The school actively carries out various activities, such as organizing inter city joint education activities for young people in the Greater Bay Area and organizing basketball corner games in Hong Kong, to strengthen communication, exchange and integration among schools in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. Having been enrolled for over two weeks, Jiajia has basically adapted to her studies. Her classmates are very enthusiastic about learning, and everyone is chasing after each other. The class atmosphere is very good. In order to better take care of Gu Jiajia, Ms. Zhou chose to come from Hong Kong to Guangzhou to accompany her. Her adaptation was even smoother. Ms. Zhou is a freelancer who used to commute between Hong Kong and Shenzhen due to work reasons. Now she lives in Guangzhou, and the transportation between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong is also very convenient. During the half month since moving to Guangzhou, Ms. Zhou has returned to Hong Kong three or four times. In 2022, Hong Kong teacher Lin Haili, who has nearly 30 years of teaching experience, brought her 7-year-old daughter Rong Rong to this school. Now my fourth grade daughter has made gratifying changes: her Mandarin and academic performance have greatly improved. In this 15 year integrated school, she can also communicate with classmates of different grades, and her horizons and confidence have been enhanced. I think the second half of my life was quite exciting Lin Haili admitted that working with mainland teachers has broadened her horizons. Recently, Lin Haili has started considering buying property in Guangzhou. Regarding her daughter's school choices during her high school years and her family's future plans, Lin Haili admitted that it seems to be full of "uncertainty", but being in the Greater Bay Area, there seem to be "various possibilities". This kind of fusion scene also happened at the Nansha Minxin Hong Kong Children's School. According to Xinhua News Agency, in 2021, Chu Xiaowen, who had been teaching in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University for 18 years, moved his family from Hong Kong to Nansha, Guangzhou and worked at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). To his surprise, in addition to the research environment and career development, Nansha's guarantee of talent is also satisfactory. In September 2022, Guangzhou Nansha Minxin Hong Kong Children's School opened, which is based on the Hong Kong education curriculum and seamlessly integrates with the Hong Kong curriculum. Chu Xiaowen's two children successfully enrolled in the school. In 2019, Guangzhou took the initiative to pilot the first batch of "Hong Kong and Macau Children's Classes" offered by schools such as Guangdong Overseas Chinese High School and Guangzhou Yuexiu District Chaotian Primary School (hereinafter referred to as "Chaotian Primary School") to provide diversified and high-quality compulsory education public services for eligible children from Hong Kong and Macau. After the policy was issued, some Hong Kong and Macau parents said, "It solved the problem of their children's education all at once. The eldest child enrolled in Peizheng Middle School, and the second child enrolled in Chaotian Primary School. Since the establishment of the Hong Kong and Macau children's class, more than 100 Hong Kong and Macau students at Chaotian Primary School have enjoyed policy incentives. On the basis of implementing the national curriculum system, the school supplements the same language school-based curriculum to enable more Hong Kong and Macao children to understand the excellent traditional Chinese culture and cultivate patriotism. The emphasis on traditional culture courses is a major highlight of the curriculum for Hong Kong and Macau children at Chaotian Primary School, with the most classic being the traditional Chinese medicine course. The school collaborates with Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and other units to create the "Qihuang Protecting Seedlings, Bacon Casting Soul" Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture into Campus Study Activity. Traditional Chinese medicine is an important part of China's excellent traditional culture. Through the 'Qihuang Xinghuo' study course, children can learn basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine, Lingnan authentic medicinal herbs, traditional Chinese medicine characteristic therapies, common disease prevention and treatment, traditional Chinese medicine history, and famous doctor allusions. "Yuan Hui, the secretary of the Party branch and principal of Chaotian Primary School, said that traditional Chinese medicine has a wide audience base in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, and Hong Kong and Macao children may have had less opportunities to come into contact with it before. After coming to Chaotian Primary School to study traditional Chinese medicine courses, they will feel very useful. Observing pulse and tongue coating... Every week, Chaotian Primary School invites doctors from Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine to teach students the secrets of traditional Chinese medicine. Xu, a fifth grade Australian student at the school, is very interested in this. Whenever he returns to Macau, he shares traditional Chinese medicine classes from mainland China with his friends, teaching them to analyze pulse and tongue coating conditions. Not only that, he also planted Chinese herbal plants such as perilla, menthol, and mugwort at home. Xu's mother said, "Relatives in Macau are very interested in the 'herbal tea' culture. Through children's communication, they learned that some common plants are the raw materials for herbal tea, and further understood the traditional Chinese medicine value of these plants." Hong Kong student Chen is also one of the 'fans' of the traditional Chinese medicine theme course at Chaotian Primary School. Previously, Chen's mother had no exposure to traditional Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. Later, her child learned about the same origin of medicine and food at school, and was asked to make health preserving soup based on the four hour weather. "These are all the knowledge that the child learned in special courses, and when the child comes home, she will tell us, and we will benefit a lot from it. In the opinion of Chen's mother, there is still a slight difference between studying in Hong Kong and studying in mainland China. At the beginning, my child didn't know simplified Chinese characters or pinyin and needed to adapt. Fortunately, with the help of the school, Principal Yuan would spend an hour every day after school tutoring the child. With her help, the child quickly adapted to life and study in mainland China, "said Chen's mother. The cultural differences between Guangzhou and Macau are not significant. The residents speak Cantonese and there are no major barriers to language communication. Additionally, some schools in Macau use textbooks from the People's Education Press, which greatly reduces the difficulty of educational integration As the parents of the first batch of students from Hong Kong and Macau, Xu's mother believes that in addition to the advantages of basic education, Chaotian Primary School has many innovative measures, such as the dual homeroom teacher system and the inclusion of intangible cultural heritage on campus, which can enable students to learn knowledge in different fields. The school also regularly collaborates with Hong Kong and Macau schools to learn from each other. What delighted her was that her child actively participated in school's wind band training, charity sales, Cantonese art lectures, and other club activities and special courses. The plan to explore innovation, upgrade the curriculum system, and carry out teacher training in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao is still advancing in the innovation path of jointly building Guangzhou Hong Kong and Macao Children's School and public school Hong Kong and Macao Children's Class. In March 2022, the Office of the Inter Ministerial Joint Conference on the Development of Service Trade of the State Council released the "Second Batch of 'Best Practice Cases' for the Comprehensive Deepening of Innovative Development Pilot of Service Trade", and the Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macao Children's School, which was founded less than a year ago, was successfully selected as a typical case for improving convenience level. On April 11, 2024, Guangzhou once again took an important step in innovating the connection between Hong Kong and Macao education. As one of the first Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) examination venues in mainland China and Guangzhou, Guangzhou Jida Hong Kong and Macau Children's School allows 53 Form 6 students who meet the examination requirements to complete the exam at the school without the need to travel to Hong Kong across the border. This is seen as an important manifestation of the "soft connectivity" between the rules and mechanisms of mainland China and Hong Kong. Previously, the DSE exam only had test centers in Hong Kong, and students studying in mainland China had to travel to Hong Kong to take the exam, which lasted for a month. Candidates also had to solve their living problems in Hong Kong during the exam period, which was very inconvenient Tan Rixu stated that this year, as a pilot school for exam centers, the school and the students taking the exam can wake up in the dormitory, have breakfast, and walk not far to the exam center. They can take the exam in their familiar campus without running around, which is very convenient. Tan Rixu is one of the eyewitnesses of the integration of Hong Kong and Macao residents living in Guangdong and Guangzhou. When it comes to the future development plan of the school, he hopes to promote the expansion of the school in the next year, and implement high-quality teaching with better campus environment and conditions. He also plans to continue using his energy to hire more and better Hong Kong teachers for the school and offer more DSE elective courses. In terms of Hong Kong and Macau children's classes, in order to better integrate Hong Kong and Macau students, Chaotian Primary School has been trying to integrate since the third session
