20 years of fruitful economic and trade cooperation between China and the Caribbean

The Fourth China Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum Ministerial Conference will be held in Hainan from September 12th to 14th. About 300 government delegations from 11 participating countries in the forum, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, representatives from the Caribbean Community Secretariat, as well as government representatives from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National International Development Cooperation Agency, attended the opening ceremony. Wang Shouwen, International Trade Negotiator and Deputy Minister of Commerce of the Ministry of Commerce, stated that China Canada cooperation has promoted the development of both sides and benefited the people of both sides. The essence of China Canada economic and trade cooperation is complementary advantages and mutual benefit. Since the establishment of the forum 20 years ago, the economic and trade cooperation between the two sides in various fields has achieved fruitful results, with a tenfold increase in trade scale. A large number of key economic and livelihood projects such as ports, airports, hospitals, and agricultural technology have been implemented, and the scope of cooperation continues to expand. At present, China has risen to become the second largest trading partner of Caribbean countries. Nigel de Freitas, the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, stated that in recent years, the economic and trade relations with China have been strong and continuously developing. Between 2018 and 2022, exports to China increased by 60%, from 1 billion Trinidad and Tobago dollars to 1.6 billion, including energy chemicals and seafood; Imports from China increased by 6.9%, mainly consisting of air conditioning components, car tires, steel pipes, and electronic products. The diverse and dynamic trade relations between the two countries have benefited each other's economies and peoples. Wayne Cook, Assistant Secretary General of the Caribbean Community, stated that China is now the main source country and important trading partner for investment and development cooperation in the Caribbean region. The forum has become an effective collective cooperation mechanism between China and member states of the Caribbean Community. This conference is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the People's Government of Hainan Province, focusing on emerging areas of cooperation and providing a platform for policy communication and expanding business opportunities for various sectors in China and Canada.
