From "Frontline" to "Yixian" - Exploring the Digital Nomad Community in the Mountains and Waters of Southern Anhui
2024-09-14
At around 9 o'clock in the morning, the hustle and bustle of the morning rush hour in big cities had not yet faded away. In the tranquil mountains and waters of southern Anhui, a group of young people had already started a new day at a different pace. The bright shared office area is filled with the aroma of coffee, and young people have come here one after another. Some sit around the round table to discuss, while others immerse themselves in work by typing on the keyboard. Pushing open the door, the outside is a beautiful scenery of lush trees and gurgling river water. This is the NCC Mount Huangshan Digital Wanderer Community located in Yi County, Mount Huangshan City, Anhui Province. The young people gathered here are a group of digital nomads. Digital nomads refer to individuals who use modern information technology for remote work, are not bound by traditional work locations, and pursue a free, flexible, and autonomous lifestyle. They brought their computers and luggage from a "first tier" big city to Yixian County, Anhui, working and living at the same time. Sitting by the window is 28 year old Ten Pen (pseudonym), who a year ago was still running around the big city. When he opened his eyes in the morning, he plunged straight into the subway and rushed to the company. By the time he finished work, the moon had already hung up, and sometimes it was difficult to see the sunshine all day. The fast-paced work made him consider changing to a slower life. With the introduction of a friend, he came to Yixian County after experiencing various digital nomad communities in different places. In addition to office and residential spaces, the community also has a small theater, library, and conference rooms. Various indoor and outdoor activities are also organized to meet everyone's different needs. "In Ten Pen's view, this is an ideal" habitat "for balancing life and work. I prefer to immerse myself in work with friends in a relaxed atmosphere rather than working hard alone at home Programmer Xiaoliang started working remotely after graduation and has been here for three weeks. He has already become familiar with the community members. He will plan his daily schedule, maintain high efficiency in work, so as to free up time to play frisbee outdoors with friends, admire stars and play board games on the terrace at night, and make plans to go for a walk around the area on weekends to experience the wild scenery of the mountains and countryside. In July of this year, the community was officially opened to the public. With the continuous improvement of supporting facilities and high-speed railway network, profound cultural heritage, livable ecological climate, and relatively low living costs in Yixian County, it has attracted more than 300 people to register. These people from all over the country and various industries have different knowledge backgrounds, making it easier for them to collide and spark together, "said the community manager, Da Cao. The community provides a space for co living and co creation, which can better link these talent resources to form a synergy. Yixian has a poetic living space and vast development opportunities. The community builds a bridge between young people and rural areas, promoting the two-way flow of resources, "said Da Cao. Community members are mostly entrepreneurs with ideas and skills, or explorers who want to develop their careers in rural areas. Sharing sessions are often held here for everyone to exchange work experience, share high-quality resources, or publish entrepreneurial ideas, help recruit partners, and provide new opportunities for young people to have something to do in rural areas, as well as for some members in their career exploration period. Yan Xun, from Beijing, is an insurance manager whose job is to provide retirement planning for clients. With the idea of incubating a project in Yixian County, she moved into the community and conducted research while living. During a pleasant interaction with a 52 year old community member, Yan Xun gained inspiration. There is a fascinating natural environment here, as well as an open and inclusive cultural environment. I plan to introduce the 'Lehuo Travel' industry near the community, creating opportunities for retirees who lack companionship and are willing to contribute their remaining energy in the city to experience life together with young people, and encouraging them to share resources and life experiences with young people. With this idea in mind, Yan Xun quickly contacted a local team in Yixian County to reach a cooperation. In early September, "Lehuo Travel" officially landed and welcomed its first batch of guests. At the same time, more digital nomads are incubating commercial projects such as coffee shops, community canteens, and art exhibitions through community teams, and leveraging community resources and venues to achieve implementation. They also plan to continue innovation and entrepreneurship around the construction of beautiful rural areas, the protection of traditional ancient villages and historic districts, and the research and development of innovative products. In order to encourage more digital nomads to stay, Yixian County has increased policy support and formulated 10 specific measures to provide policy support in terms of living security, and established a 1 million yuan digital nomad entrepreneurship investment guidance fund. At the same time, more incubation platforms will be built locally to expand the digital nomads into the "talent pool" for rural revitalization and help promote rural development. At present, there is a steady flow of applicants for NCC Mount Huangshan Digital Wanderer Community. The dormitory of the nearby old winery is undergoing accelerated transformation. When completed, it will become the accommodation space for the second phase of the community. At that time, more young people will "travel" to Yixian County, adding a vibrant look to the white walls and black tiles. (New Society)
