Train soldiers, British army uses Terminator robots
2024-09-13
According to the Daily Telegraph website on September 7th, the British Army will for the first time use Terminator style robots that can communicate and respond to soldiers in battlefield scenes. According to reports, these robots have a head and torso size similar to that of ordinary males, and are equipped with artificial intelligence software ChatGPT, which can communicate with soldiers during training. This robot, named SimStriker, responds to soldiers' movements and speech patterns. Calm words can control the situation, but if a soldier gets angry, the robot will become hostile and even fire BB bullets from its abdomen. In a training scenario, soldiers encountered SimStriker while entering a village where locals needed food, electricity, and medical supplies. If soldiers choose not to provide assistance, the robot's emotions will change and it will become more hostile. The instructors observing in the safe room can also make changes to this technology by altering the emotions of the robots, creating a more challenging scenario for soldiers. This is the first time that soldiers have been able to train with "thoughtful" enemies, representing a new generation of intelligent training for soldiers in urban warfare environments. The SimStriker project was launched in 2020 and is currently being used by personnel from the 16th Airborne Assault Brigade in Colchester. It is equipped with sensors that can accurately record soldiers' shooting accuracy and speed. The camera inside the robot's forehead can detect motion and light. If it recognizes someone entering the room, it will send a signal to activate the robot. During rest, it can even mimic inattentive guards by burping. When alert, it will say short phrases such as' who is there 'and can shout commands such as' stop' from the speaker installed on the collarbone. This robot was invented by 4GD, a British company founded by two former Royal Marines, and provides combat training for soldiers through the use of virtual reality and special effects. 4GD company plans to further develop robots that can simulate organs on the torso to more realistically display injuries on the battlefield. This robot can replace the static wooden targets widely used by soldiers in urban combat training. James Crowley, the head of business development at 4GD, said, 'The new generation of intelligent adversaries has improved the authenticity and effectiveness of soldier training.'. He hopes SimStriker can be promoted throughout the entire military in the future. At present, the army has shifted towards using artificial intelligence more frequently in daily life. According to reports, the UK Ministry of Defence announced last year that due to the rise of artificial intelligence, the number of troops needed on the front lines in the future will be reduced. In July 2023, during Ben Wallace's tenure as Defense Secretary, the Ministry of Defense stated in an updated Defense Strategic Command document that it had learned lessons from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Ministry of National Defense stated that this conflict will "change our perception of the size of the armed forces". This document lists the expected capabilities of the military on the front line in the future, including the use of robots, altering soldiers' performance through human augmentation technology, and secretly targeting opponents with laser or radio frequency weapons.
