Tianwen-3 launch mission plan to be implemented around 2028

2024-09-06

China's Tianwen-3 mission plans to conduct two launch missions around 2028 to achieve the return of Mars samples to Earth, "said Liu Jizhong, chief designer of the Tianwen-3 mission at the China National Space Administration's Lunar Exploration and Aerospace Engineering Center, at the Second International Conference on Deep Space Exploration (Tiandu) on the 5th. The theme of this conference is "International Lunar Research Station - Co consultation, Co construction, and Sharing", inviting domestic and foreign space agencies, research institutions, and universities to jointly discuss major issues such as engineering, technology, science, and talent cultivation related to the cooperative construction of the International Lunar Research Station. At the main forum of the conference, Liu Jizhong delivered a keynote speech on the "Tianwen-3 Mars Sampling and Return Mission". He introduced that in scientific research, establishing the exploration of life traces as the first scientific goal. In terms of engineering technology, fire surface sampling, fire surface takeoff and ascent, ring fire rendezvous, and planetary protection are key technologies. Thirteen stages are planned, and detection methods such as positioning and remote sensing are adopted to carry out Mars sample research and data research based on the full chain elements of life traces, ensuring that samples can be retrieved and scientific discoveries can be made. In terms of planetary protection, we will effectively implement international conventions, carry out forward and backward planetary protection, ensure that Mars and Earth are not contaminated, and preserve the authenticity of samples. The Tianwen-3 mission will carry out international cooperation in three aspects: payload cooperation, sample and data sharing, and joint research on future planning. It will collaborate with scientists around the world to conduct research on Mars sample and data sharing, and work with countries or research institutions to define the mission and tasks of Mars research stations, analyze requirements, conduct conceptual research, design implementation plans, and tackle key technologies to jointly build a Mars home Liu Jizhong said.
