Kunming, Yunnan: The 'Green Kidney' Protects the Pearl of the Plateau
2024-08-30
There was a period of time when Dianchi Lake, known as the pearl of the plateau, was severely polluted, with declining water quality, outbreaks of blue-green algae, and rampant growth of water hyacinth. In recent years, Kunming City in Yunnan Province has taken measures such as source control and pollution interception, precise prevention and control, and scientific water replenishment, and has continued to restore the lakefront ecology. Under the protection of Dianchi Lake's "Green Kidney" lakefront ecological belt, the beautiful scenery of clear lake shores and green water is gradually becoming a reality. Recently, reporters saw at the Caohai Lake Ecological Wetland located in Kunming Dianchi National Tourism Resort that reeds swayed in the wind, groups of small fish swam back and forth in the reed marshes, and white egrets hovered in the air before landing on lotus leaves in the lake, pacing back and forth in search of food. Many citizens and tourists take a walk on the trail covered in red flowers and green leaves. Zhang Zhao, a resident of Xinhe Community in Fuhai Street, Xishan District, Kunming City, who lives near the Caohai Lake Ecological Wetland, said, "This wetland was built in recent years and has now become a great place for citizens and tourists to relax and unwind. I come here almost every day." The Caohai Lake Ecological Wetland is a microcosm of the restoration of the lake's ecology along the Dianchi Lake in Kunming. In recent years, in order to gradually restore the virtuous cycle of the lake ecosystem in Dianchi Lake, Kunming City has actively promoted the ecological restoration and construction project of the Dianchi Lake shore. The construction of wetlands in Xinhe and Wangjiadui plots in Caohai area has been completed, and wetland upgrading work has been carried out in Laoyu River, Dounan, Haidong, Baofeng, Xinghai, Haihong and other areas. The Dianchi Lake shore has initially built a closed lakefront ecological belt, which has become a characteristic and highlight of Dianchi Lake's protection and management. Yang Peng, Chief Economist of Kunming Dianchi Lake National Tourism Resort, introduced that the restoration of Dianchi Lake Ecological Wetland mainly involves the construction of wetland parks, healthy greenways, sewage interception pipelines, and river treatment into Yunnan. In order to truly reflect biodiversity in the constructed wetland, dozens of trees and shrubs have been planted in different zones, fully utilizing the natural regulation function of plants on local microclimates. In the Caohai Lake Ecological Wetland, some areas are a combination of trees, shrubs, and lawns, some areas are a combination of trees and lawns, and some areas are a combination of herbaceous plants and aquatic plants. The vegetation community types are rich, layered, and orderly, becoming a series of green landscapes that attract many tourists and citizens to come and play. Like the Caohai Lake Ecological Wetland, the ecological restoration function of Baofeng Wetland located in Guandu District, Kunming City is accelerating. Entering Baofeng Wetland, under the blue sky, green trees are arranged in a staggered manner, flowers are blooming in competition, the lake water is rippling with blue waves, and water birds are swimming and playing. A gentle breeze blew, and the leaves and flowers swayed in the wind. Li Yunli, the captain of the "Women's Salvage Team" in Dianchi Lake, who is leading several team members to salvage weeds on the water, said that more than a decade ago, the water in Dianchi Lake was still green and shiny, with a layer of paint covering the surface and some areas emitting a foul odor. At that time, there were a lot of water hyacinth, moss, and plastic waste, and two to three tons had to be salvaged every day. Now many wetlands have been restored along the banks of Dianchi Lake, the lake water has become clearer, and there is less garbage. Yuan Tingju, Director of the Dianchi Lake Management Bureau in Kunming, introduced that 62900 acres of lakeside ecological belts have been built along the Dianchi Lake, forming a closed ecological belt with an average width of 200 meters and a vegetation coverage rate of 81%. It can absorb 1324 tons of total nitrogen and 74 tons of total phosphorus in the water every year. At the same time, the number of plants in the lakeside ecological zone has increased from 232 in 2007 to 303 currently, the number of birds has increased from 89 to 175, and the number of fish species in Dianchi Lake has recovered to 26, significantly improving biodiversity. Wetlands are known as the 'kidneys of the earth'. In the future, we will increase efforts to build and protect the ecological belt along the Dianchi Lake, so that it can fully play its role in safeguarding the pearl of the plateau Yuan Tingju said.
