Adhere to multilateralism and address climate change

2024-08-29

The climate crisis profoundly affects the survival and development of humanity. We must actively address climate change and achieve green, low-carbon, and sustainable development. "Liu Zhenmin, China's special envoy for climate change affairs, recently attended the 2024 Indonesia Net Zero Summit. In an interview with our reporter, he said that achieving the global carbon neutrality goal is not only related to the well-being of contemporary people, but also to the survival of future generations. The 2024 Indonesia Net Zero Summit is hosted by the Indonesian Foreign Policy Association. Participants share their views and experiences on Indonesia's climate strategy, energy transition, climate financing, carbon emission rights and pricing, green technology, and other topics. It is believed that countries around the world, including Indonesia, should attach importance to implementing climate commitments, accelerating the energy transition process, and emphasizing the importance of joint cooperation in achieving a sustainable future. Liu Zhenmin participated in the sub forum "Consistent Words and Actions: Which Countries are Advocates for Taking Action to Address Climate Change?" and introduced China's experience in green and low-carbon development and energy transformation. He said that as the largest developing country in the world, China is well aware of its role in tackling climate change and unswervingly follows the green and low-carbon development path in the process of achieving Chinese path to modernization. In order to implement the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals announced by President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government has established and completed the "1+N" policy system for carbon peak and carbon neutrality; Establish the carbon market with the largest global coverage of greenhouse gas emissions; During the 13th Five Year Plan period, actively developing a circular economy has contributed more than 25% to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making it one of the countries with the fastest decline in global energy intensity; In 2023, the output rate of major resources will increase by about 60% compared to 2012, and the output value of the resource recycling industry will exceed 3.7 trillion yuan, driving employment of over 35 million people; By the end of 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy generation will reach nearly 52%, surpassing the installed capacity of fossil fuel energy for the first time. Liu Zhenmin emphasized that the world has entered a new era where renewable energy is gradually replacing fossil fuels. Energy transformation is the correct path for countries to achieve sustainable development, and China's experience in energy transformation has important reference significance for the world. China will continue to vigorously promote technological innovation in the green and low-carbon fields, providing high-quality production capacity and products for the global response to climate change. Due to its unique geographical environment and climate characteristics, Indonesia is highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Liu Zhenmin stated that as a major Southeast Asian country, Indonesia can play an important role in addressing climate change globally. China and Indonesia have similar national conditions, and China has a lot of technology and experience to share. The two countries should strengthen bilateral exchanges, especially in the development of clean energy such as electric vehicles and photovoltaic power generation, and further enhance cooperation. Liu Zhenmin said that whether Southeast Asia can achieve energy transformation is not only a matter for Southeast Asia itself, but also a major issue related to the global energy transformation process. China and ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, are connected by land and sea and live adjacent to each other. In recent years, China has carried out multiple collaborations in the field of energy, including wind energy, hydropower, green transportation, and more. "China will continue to uphold the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, strengthen cooperation and exchanges with ASEAN countries through South South cooperation on climate change, and jointly build a green" the Belt and Road ", so as to jointly make positive contributions to global climate governance and low-carbon energy transformation, and jointly build a clean and beautiful world." The frequent occurrence of extreme weather and climate events and their negative effects have repeatedly alarmed us, but geopolitical conflicts and unilateralism are still expanding the global climate governance deficit. The efforts of humanity to address climate change are far from enough, and international cooperation needs to be further strengthened, "Liu Zhenmin emphasized the importance of adhering to multilateralism in addressing climate change." Countries should break down barriers through technological cooperation, fill the gap in global climate governance, rebuild mutual trust between the North and the South through strong international cooperation, and promote a fair, orderly, and just energy transition.
