Movie preferences reveal emotional response patterns in the brain

2024-08-29

Do you prefer action movies, comedies, or documentaries? A new study conducted by scientists at Martin Luther Hallvetenberg University in Germany suggests that a person's preferred film genres can reveal how their brain operates: fans of action and comedy films have a very strong response to negative emotional stimuli; People who enjoy documentaries, crime movies, and thrillers have a significantly reduced response. The research results were published in the latest issue of the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience. Crime movie enthusiasts have much smaller brain responses to emotional stimuli. The study compared movie preference data with brain activity records of approximately 260 individuals. The subjects provided information about their movie preferences, and the team analyzed the participants' brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. When lying in the MRI machine, the subjects were shown fearful or angry faces and geometric shapes. The team explained that through this established test, they can measure how the brain processes emotional stimuli. The team focuses on studying the neuronal activity of the amygdala and nucleus accumbens in the brain. The former is responsible for handling important emotions and can trigger combat or escape reactions to respond to threats; The latter is the "reward center" of the brain. Research has found that action movie enthusiasts exhibit the strongest reactions in both areas. This is quite unexpected, as action movies usually provide a lot of excitement, and their fans should be accustomed to it. But in reality, action movie enthusiasts are particularly susceptible to emotional stimulation and find it very attractive. Similar brain activity has also been found in the brains of people who enjoy comedy films. On the contrary, the brain regions of crime movie, thriller, and documentary enthusiasts are much less responsive to emotional stimuli. (New Society)
