Pierce the sky upwards! Satellite Internet "Thousands of Sails Competing"
2024-08-28
Recently, the launch ceremony of the first batch of networked satellites for China's "Thousand Sail Constellation" was held at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. The "One Arrow 18 Satellites" successfully launched into orbit, officially kicking off the Chinese version of the "Star Chain" plan. This marks that China has taken an important step towards the establishment of the global satellite Internet. According to the plan, in 2025, "Qianfan Constellation" will complete the deployment of 648 satellites in the first phase, and initially build a satellite Internet system with global coverage. It is predicted that by 2025, the scale of China's satellite Internet market is expected to reach 44.692 billion yuan, and the average annual growth rate from 2022 to 2025 is expected to remain at 12.4%. Satellite Internet has undoubtedly become another "new battlefield" of global competition. Satellite Internet refers to the formation of large-scale networks to radiate around the world by launching a certain number of satellites to provide ground and air terminals with broadband Internet access and other communication services. In general, it means building the base station into space, making each satellite a mobile base station, and providing users worldwide with large bandwidth, flexible and convenient Internet access services. At present, 5G technology has been popularized and the network speed is fast enough. Why build a base station in the air and develop satellite Internet? Industry experts pointed out that there are still a large number of Internet coverage blind spots in the world, and more than 3 billion people still cannot enjoy convenient Internet services. Satellite communication can provide a low-cost network coverage solution for areas with relatively weak infrastructure, and is also the known optimal solution for communication in natural areas such as oceans, deserts, glaciers, etc. Therefore, as an important part of the future communication network, satellite Internet is the basis for building an integrated space, space, space and sea communication system and realizing the interconnection of all things in the world. With its increasingly prominent national strategic position, potential market economic value, and scarce space frequency orbit resources, satellite Internet has become the focus of global attention and competition. In recent years, China has attached great importance to the development of satellite Internet industry. In April 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission included satellite Internet in the category of "new infrastructure". In 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed to accelerate the layout of satellite communication in the "14th Five Year Plan" for the development of the information and communication industry; Promote the deep integration of satellite communication systems and ground information communication systems, and initially form an information network that covers the whole world and integrates space and earth, providing global information network services for users of land, sea, air, and space. In April 2021, China Satellite Network Group Co., Ltd. was established to take charge of the overall planning of China's satellite Internet development. At the beginning of 2024, seven departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Implementation Opinions on Promoting the Innovation and Development of Future Industries, proposing the research on key technologies such as forward-looking layout of 6G, satellite Internet, mobile phone direct connection satellite, and building a new digital infrastructure that is high-speed, ubiquitous, integrated, smart, green, safe and efficient. Policies at the national level have emerged frequently. As a "national team" in the field of information and communication, three major operators have deployed the "heaven earth integration" satellite Internet. China Telecom took the lead in launching satellite Internet business in 2009, establishing China Telecom Group Satellite Communications Co., Ltd. to exclusively operate Tiantong satellite mobile communications business; On September 8, 2023, the "Mobile Direct Satellite Communication" service was officially launched. Since then, it has pioneered the direct satellite connection for automobiles, relying on the "Tiantong-1" satellite mobile communication system to provide more complete communication means for in vehicle communication. China Mobile completed the first domestic operator NRNTN low orbit satellite laboratory simulation verification in September 2023, supporting mobile satellite broadband services; In April of this year, China Space Information Group Co., Ltd. was jointly established with China Star Network and China Ordnance Industry. Its business scope includes not only satellite navigation services and satellite communication services, but also big data, artificial intelligence, and geographic remote sensing services. China Unicom, Lianmei Online and Chengdu Haitekairong jointly set up Unicom Hangmei Network Co., Ltd. to create three product lines of "Woxingkong", "Woxinglu" and "Woxinghai" and provide broadband satellite Internet services integrating heaven, earth and sea for global civil aviation, ocean going ships, etc. At present, seizing the opportunities of satellite Internet has become an industry consensus. However, market development should not only focus on the "national team", but also inject fresh energy to stimulate industrial development vitality through openness and competition. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Opinions on Innovating the Management of the Information and Communication Industry and Optimizing the Business Environment, emphasizing that we should further promote the opening of telecommunications business to private capital, increase support for private enterprises to participate in mobile communication resale and other business and service innovation, orderly promote the reform of satellite Internet business access system, and better support the development of private telecommunications enterprises. The reform of satellite Internet business access system has opened the door for private enterprises to enter the new track of satellite Internet. Thousands of sails compete, and those who strive to sail enter. As an important part of national new infrastructure construction, China's satellite Internet industry is ushering in a "golden age" driven by policies and regulations, technology upgrading and industrial capital.
