The 2024 Fujian Taiwan Hong Kong Macao University Dragon and Lion Dance Competition was held on the 25th at the Xiamen campus of Huaqiao University, attracting more than 150 athletes from 12 teams from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and Hong Kong and Macao. Raise the dance baton high, step on the drum beats, and the colorful dragon and lion dance with the students, sometimes rolling and jumping, sometimes wandering and circling, vividly appearing. Each participating team is giving their all, integrating their understanding and love for dragon and lion dance culture into their exciting performances. The dragon and lion dance cultures on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same roots and origins. Taiwanese teams tend to focus on innovation, while mainland teams place more emphasis on basic skills, inheriting traditional performance techniques and forms Chen Zhenyuan, an athlete from Taiwan's Weiyi Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, has been studying dragon and lion dance for 13 years. This time, he and his team members came to the mainland for exchange and jointly discussed the changes in dragon and lion dance skills. Dragon dance is a folk activity that expresses the totem worship of the Chinese nation, while lion dance is an art form that imitates the behavior of lions to perform. After thousands of years of tempering, the Chinese nation has combined dragon and lion elements with folk martial arts, becoming a highly distinctive national sport. Our student union will innovate dragon and lion dance programs by combining popular culture, such as combining dragon dance with Harry Potter and wearing dragon balls on the Harry Potter wand Nien Yu hsiang, the leader of the Taipei City University Alumni Association representative team, believes that innovative performance content is of great benefit to the promotion and inheritance of dragon and lion dance culture, but innovation must also be based on traditional skills. Vice President Wang Lixia of Huaqiao University expressed her hope to promote cultural exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait through this dragon and lion dance competition. "We share common historical memories, cultural traditions, and national emotions. This competition provides a rare opportunity for us to enhance understanding, deepen friendship, and make progress together in competition." This competition is not only a competition of skills, but also a cultural exchange and inheritance. Through this platform, college students learn from each other, make progress together, and enhance their friendship with each other. They injected new vitality into the ancient dragon and lion dance culture with the vitality and passion of their youth. (New Society)
