2024-08-22

In the southwest corner of the Zijingang campus of Zhejiang University, there is a minimalist style building with gray and red brick walls that are textured and modern technology and historical art complement each other. This is the Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology. The Zhejiang University Art Museum, with a total construction area of 25000 square meters, is an art history teaching museum that covers precious cultural relics and artworks from prehistoric civilization to modern times. Today's "Cultural China Tour" "Check in" to the Zhejiang University Art and Archaeology Museum, let's step into this place together, talk to ancient people, and experience the exchange and mutual learning between different civilizations. Encountering the beauty of humanity through time and space in Hangzhou in August, the scorching summer has not stopped everyone from visiting museums. At the Zhejiang University Art Museum, more than 4000 people come to visit every day, and the scene is bustling. Watching exhibitions, listening to explanations, taking photos and recording, stamping and clocking in, everyone is immersed in it, and there is a lot of fun. CCTV reporter Wu Wenqian: This cuneiform tablet discovered in Mesopotamia around 3000 BC is the oldest cultural relic on display at the "Asian Civilization on the Silk Road" exhibition at the Zhejiang University Art Museum. This exhibition is very popular during the summer, and many visitors come specifically for it, because it gathers treasures of ancient civilizations from all over Asia, and everyone can personally experience what civilization exchange and mutual learning are. This Tang Dynasty tri colored phoenix head pottery bottle demonstrates how this design originated from glass containers along the Eastern Mediterranean coast, was introduced to China through Iran, and became a popular phoenix head bottle during the Tang Dynasty; Glass necklaces dating back over 3000 years were not transparent, yet they were more precious than gold back then; Hu people riding camels, pottery figurines depicting music and dance, pottery figurines of civil officials... seem to instantly travel back to the prosperous Tang Dynasty in Chang'an City. More than 200 precious collections from museums at home and abroad have come to you across thousands of years. Revisiting the Silk Road here, the journey is always stunning. Audience Zheng Huixin: After listening to the Ude qin, I feel that it is quite similar to the Chinese pipa, and I have a deeper understanding of the entire Asian civilization along the Silk Road. Since its opening, the Zhejiang University Art Museum has been striving to create a large classroom for art and archaeology, with guided tours and free access. If you want to learn archaeological knowledge, you can come and see the permanent exhibition of "The Beauty of Creation". Here, not only are there the treasures of the museum - the remains of Tang Yan Zhenqing's "Xiting Ji", but also the portrait bricks excavated from the Southern Dynasty tomb chamber in Xiaohengshan. Liu Bin, Director of the Museum of Art and Archaeology at Zhejiang University: The school aims to use our museum as a base for aesthetic education and quality education. We have organized this exhibition from the perspective of the development of human material culture. We hope to show the cultural development of Chinese people through ceramics, bronze, jade and lacquer. This summer, there is another exhibition at the Zhejiang University Art Museum, which attracted nearly 5000 visitors on the first day of its launch. It is the special exhibition "Painting Views: The Classical World in Mountains and Waters" under the theme of "Glorious Era Revisions - Achievements Exhibition of 'Chinese Historical Painting Series'". The high-definition sample drafts of over 220 exquisite ancient Chinese paintings, including "Spring Mountain Reading Picture" and "Peach Blossom Land Picture", can be enjoyed in one go. Do you want to know how ancient people cultivated land and woven cloth in the classical world from the perspective of historical painting? The curatorial team has put in a lot of effort and spent almost a year researching and designing, selecting various types of images such as overall, partial, and detailed to present the diverse atmosphere and brilliant culture of landscape paintings. Exhibition curator and chief expert of the Center for Ancient Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at Zhejiang University, Chen Ye: This painting is "Qingluan Xiaosi Tu" by a painter named Li Cheng in the Northern Song Dynasty. In this giant painting, there is a section that represents three types of architecture and three commercial formats. In the entire painting, it is not very eye-catching, so we will take a small part and enlarge it, enlarging the content related to historical and cultural connotations. The Yan Zhenqing Stele, donated by alumni, is the treasure of the museum. In the first exhibition hall of the Zhejiang University Art Museum, the most eye-catching is a cracked stone tablet, which is the museum's treasure of the museum - the Tang Dynasty Yan Zhenqing's "Xiting Ji" remains, which is a must see treasure for many visitors who come here for fame. What is the story behind this treasure collection? Let's unravel the treasure of the town hall together. Liu Ying, a doctoral student from the School of Art and Archaeology at Zhejiang University: What is presented before us now is the remains of Yan Zhenqing's "Xiting Ji". We can see that this stele cuts horizontally from left to right in the middle, and its upper part is well preserved. At the same time, we can also see the characters "Zhenqing". Yan Zhenqing's handed down calligraphy works mainly consist of inscriptions, while there are only about 10 of them in the country. This inscription is the only one passed down by Yan Zhenqing during his time in Huzhou and preserved in our Zhejiang province. It is the treasure of our museum. Time flies, and the remains of the monument were donated by alumni. In 2019, on the occasion of the opening of the Zhejiang University Art Museum, we once again met the world, allowing us to have a cross temporal exchange with the great calligrapher Yan Zhenqing from over 1200 years ago. Liu Ying, a doctoral student from the School of Art and Archaeology at Zhejiang University: This was personally written and written by Yan Zhenqing in the 12th year of the Dali era of the Tang Dynasty, which is 777 AD. Xiting was a gathering place for literati built by Wu Xing, the governor of the Southern Liang Dynasty at that time. However, during the Tang Dynasty, this pavilion gradually fell into disrepair and was destroyed. Li Qing, the magistrate of Wucheng County at that time, reported this matter to Yan Zhenqing, the governor of Huzhou, requesting repairs to the pavilion. Yan Zhenqing readily agreed and personally wrote the content of the inscription. The sunlight shone through the glass window onto the remains of the stele, revealing the profound, majestic, and upright calligraphy of Yan style. Seeing this broken monument is like seeing Yan Zhenqing himself. During the An Lushan Rebellion, this famous Tang Dynasty official, as the Prefect of Pingyuan, was the first to rise up against the rebels in the north and held the positions of Minister of Personnel and Grand Tutor of the Crown Prince. In 784 AD, he was sent to persuade the rebel general Li Xilie. Despite knowing it was impossible, he bravely went there and sternly refused the thief, but was ultimately executed by hanging. Yan Zhenqing interpreted 'words are like people' with integrity. Embracing technology brings millennium Danqing to life. At the Zhejiang University Art Museum, there is an exhibition hall that has been designated as a long-term exhibition space for the achievements of the "Chinese Historical Painting Series" since February 2023. The "Chinese Historical Painting Department" project, compiled and published by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, collaborates with more than 260 cultural and museum institutions worldwide, and compiles over 12000 pieces (sets) of ancient Chinese paintings. At the new "Big Series" achievement exhibition at the end of July, a flowing and varied style of the Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake is refreshing. This was created by the team from the Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory at Zhejiang University using generative artificial intelligence. How was this done? Let's take a look at how young researchers from the School of Art and Archaeology at Zhejiang University embrace artificial intelligence and activate the infinite possibilities of ancient painting. On the screen, Dong Bangda's "Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake" from the Qing Dynasty comes into view in a completely new visual form: sometimes presenting the green landscape style of Wang Ximeng from the Northern Song Dynasty, or using the sharp brush of Li Tang, a painter from the Southern Song Dynasty, making people unconsciously walk through the spring, summer, autumn, and winter of West Lake. Chen Xiaojiao from the Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory at Zhejiang University: The wall is decorated with paintings by artists from different dynasties. We hope that after browsing through different paintings, the audience can also see that artificial intelligence technology can learn the characteristics and features of their paintings, such as golden and green landscapes, and then generate works. This AI drawn scroll of the Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake is from the Zhejiang University Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory team. Chen Xiaojiao is the head of the laboratory data visualization analysis team. She guided six graduate students to complete this interaction design work in two months. Chinese traditional painting is a vast and profound artistic treasure. When AI models encounter ancient paintings, they need to learn the vast and complex details of color, brushstrokes, ink, etc., which brings many challenges to the team. Chen Xiaojiao from the Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory at Zhejiang University: In terms of data processing in the early stages, ancient paintings are quite complex. Different painters and brushstrokes have their own styles, and for image data like this, you need to build a very powerful knowledge system in order to deeply explore and study this data. The "Chinese Painting Series of Various Dynasties" project not only gave Chen Xiaojiao the confidence to conduct interdisciplinary research, but also provided her with the motivation to work almost non-stop for the past three years. With the accumulated publishing achievements of the "Big Series" team over the years, it has become her and her team's natural mission to explore and inherit the genetic code of Chinese civilization in ancient Chinese painting. Chen Xiaojiao from the Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory at Zhejiang University: The team of the "Big Department" has been shooting our ancient Chinese paintings around the world for nearly 20 years, which is itself a salvage cultural protection project. We may be standing on their shoulders doing their 2.0 version. Embracing technology, at the Art and Archaeology Image Data Laboratory of Zhejiang University, a series of scientific research achievements have brought the millennium old Danqing to life and come to life: you can rest and sit in the water pavilion like ancient people, quietly enjoying falling flowers and swimming fish; You can also walk among the green mountains and rivers, experiencing the beauty of the four seasons. They hope to use the light of scientific research to illuminate thousands of households and bring excellent traditional Chinese culture into thousands of households. (New Society)
