Many people watch short videos on social media platforms to relieve boredom. A recent study conducted by Canadian scientists suggests that frequently switching videos (roughly watching parts of the content) to alleviate boredom may actually make people more bored and less satisfied with the content. The relevant paper was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Overview. The study included 7 experiments involving over 1200 college students from the United States or Canada. In two basic experiments, when participants feel bored, they will watch videos. These participants initially believed that frequently switching videos without watching the entire video would make them feel less bored. In a study, scientists had participants watch two videos. One of the videos, all participants were asked to watch according to the process. And in another video, participants can freely switch to seven other 5-minute videos within 10 minutes. Participants reported that when they watched the entire video in progress, they felt less bored and found the content to be more engaging and meaningful than when switching between different videos. Dr. Cardi Tam, the research leader and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto, stated that frequent switching between short videos can actually make people feel more bored. If people want to have a more enjoyable experience while watching videos, they should try to focus on the content and try not to "skim". (New Society)
