How can grotto temples avoid wind and rain? Experts from multiple countries discuss the protection and governance of cultural heritage
2024-08-21
The increase in extreme weather, strong demand for tourism, and challenges faced by protection technology and capabilities; The threat of climate change persists and requires corresponding planning and preparation; Biological factors have become one of the main threats at present, and there is an urgent need for early prevention... How can grotto temples that continue human civilization avoid unexpected "storms"? In recent days, cultural heritage conservation scholars from 16 countries around the world have jointly explored management strategies. From August 19 to 21, the "2024 · Grotto Temple Protection International Forum" hosted by the National Cutural Heritage Administration of China was held in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The participating experts discussed the international governance issues of cultural heritage protection around issues such as the concept and technology of grotto temple protection, archaeology and value interpretation, management and capacity building. Guan Qiang, deputy director of the National Cutural Heritage Administration of China, said that in recent years, China has carried out extensive cooperation with a number of international organizations, actively participated in the international governance of cultural heritage protection, built the first international cooperation mechanism in the field of cultural heritage in Asia, and continued to guide and support Chinese cultural heritage protection institutions to carry out research cooperation on the protection of grotto temples with famous cultural heritage protection research institutions in the United States, Italy, Japan, Britain, and France, achieving a series of remarkable results. It is reported that China has achieved fruitful results in the exploration of the protection and repair of grotto temples, reinforcement of carriers and environmental governance, digital preservation and monitoring. In recent years, the collaborative projects of the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, Dunhuang Academy, Getty Conservation Institute of the United States, and Australian Heritage Committee on the protection of the Mogao Grottoes have not only guided the scientific protection and management of the Mogao Grottoes, but also given birth to the "Guidelines for the Protection of Chinese Cultural Relics and Monuments" that are still effectively guiding the practice of cultural relic protection in China. The international exchange of cultural heritage has promoted the development of Chinese cultural heritage protection awareness and the improvement of protection level Guan Qiang stated that with the development of China's cultural heritage protection industry, China will also participate in international cooperation with a more active attitude, supporting cultural heritage protection research institutions represented by Dunhuang Academy to "invite in" and "go out" more, and make due contributions to international cultural heritage protection and development. Protection and management are multifaceted, requiring an understanding of the full value of the site and its protection. New threats such as climate change that may arise are also worth being vigilant about... "said Neville Argennur, chief project expert at the Getty Conservation Institute in the United States, who has been affiliated with the Dunhuang Academy for more than 30 years. The challenges faced by the Mogao Grottoes, such as dangerous rocks and floods, have been resolved through joint efforts between the United States and China. Su Bomin, the director of Dunhuang Academy, introduced that over the years, the institute has gradually summarized and formed a complete set of key technology systems, including ancient mural painting and sculpture, protection and reinforcement of cave temple cliffs and soil sites, monitoring and early warning of grottoes, and digitization of cultural relics, which have been applied to more than 200 cultural relics protection projects in China. More than 30 digital exhibitions have been held both domestically and internationally, and digital technology has been utilized to innovate tourist visiting modes, effectively alleviating the contradiction between tourism openness and cultural relic protection, and providing reference ideas for the protection and effective utilization of fragile cultural heritage such as grottoes. In recent years, cultural relic protection not only involves natural sciences such as geology, chemistry, and biology, but also relates to humanities such as history, art, and archaeology, as well as engineering sciences such as computer science and technology, artificial intelligence, and environmental engineering. Relying solely on a single discipline is no longer sufficient to meet the practical needs of cultural relic protection, and conducting in-depth interdisciplinary research has become an inevitable trend. Liu Hanlong, an academician of the CAE Member and a professor of Chongqing University, said that in recent years, research has found that a large number of stone cultural relics appear peeling, incomplete and other diseases. In view of the relative shortcomings of traditional repair materials, microbial geotechnical engineering, as a new interdisciplinary, has attracted attention at home and abroad, and the research on microbial technology repair, reinforcement of soil sites and cave sites has emerged, which provides a new idea for the repair of stone cultural relics. To protect cultural relics for future generations, while providing education and cultural insights into past civilizations Vincent de Tar, a professor at the University of Paris Saint Germain in France, stated that the comprehensive development of heritage science in the future is committed to protecting and understanding cultural heritage through the integration of science, technology, and humanities. This is crucial for protecting cultural heritage, ensuring future generations inherit it, and enhancing historical and cultural understanding. (New Society)
