India tests third-generation domestically produced portable anti tank missile
2024-08-16
According to a report on the Russian television website on August 14th, India has successfully test fired domestically produced portable anti tank missiles. The missile was developed by India's main weapons research and development organization, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and is India's third-generation single soldier portable anti tank missile system. The Indian news agency AsiaNews International quoted DRDO officials as saying that the test was conducted at a field shooting range in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan state. The report said that this test launch has brought the development of the system close to completion. According to reports, the initial trial of the system was conducted in April this year. The statement from the Indian Ministry of Defense at the time stated, "The missile and warhead performance are both excellent." According to New Delhi Television, after the recent test launch, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh called the project an "important step towards achieving self-reliance in developing defense systems based on advanced technology. The report points out that this progress comes at a time when New Delhi is striving to increase the production and export of independently developed weapons. Since 2017, India's military exports have grown nine times. Last year, India's overseas arms sales amounted to approximately $1.8 billion, and the Modi government has set a goal to increase this figure to nearly $6 billion. New Delhi announced last week that India's defense exports surged 78% year-on-year in the first quarter of this fiscal year. According to the Hindustan Times, India exports military hardware to approximately 85 countries, including missiles, light helicopters, coastal patrol boats, personal protective equipment, surveillance systems, and radar. Meanwhile, New Delhi has approved a list of over 36000 products that must be produced domestically rather than imported. One third of this quota has already been reached. So far, this has led Indian defense manufacturers to sign orders worth approximately $900 million with domestic suppliers. According to reports, DRDO showcased dozens of other Indian made weapon systems during the "Wave Power" exercise held by the Indian Air Force in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on the 13th. Despite actively enhancing its domestic defense manufacturing capabilities, this South Asian country remains the world's largest purchaser of weapons. According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, from 2019 to 2023, India accounted for 36% of global arms imports, with Russia being India's largest arms supplier.
