Strengthening information protection is the key to addressing online bullying
2024-08-14
Recently, a soon to be high school student's "unboxing" incident has attracted attention. 'Human flesh unboxing' refers to the act of publishing personal privacy information obtained through illegal searches online, guiding netizens to condemn those who have been 'unboxed'. 'Human flesh unboxing' is a form of online violence. The victims received a large number of harassing phone calls, text messages, and personal information that were widely spread online, seriously affecting their normal lives. Some netizens have weak legal awareness and cannot distinguish the boundary between "eating melons" and "breaking the law", especially minors who are easily influenced by negative factors and participate in it, even becoming the initiators of such online violence, which has a very negative impact. According to reports, most of the "unboxing" information comes from internal personnel such as couriers and operators. The anonymity of the internet makes it difficult for criminals who obtain information through "opening boxes" to trace their origins, and coupled with inadequate platform supervision, it results in lower criminal costs for online "opening boxes", posing challenges to network governance. The Cyberspace Administration of China has repeatedly targeted the behavior of "opening boxes with human flesh" in the "Clean up Action" on the internet. Recently, it has issued a notice to launch a special campaign nationwide to improve the online environment for minors during the summer of 2024. The practice of "opening boxes with human flesh" against minors on social media platforms is widely recognized. To combat online violence, it is necessary to gather the wisdom of all parties and form a strong joint force. Social networking platforms should take on more responsibilities, improve content review mechanisms, and use technological means to efficiently identify and filter out harmful information; Establish convenient reporting channels to encourage users to actively report negative information and illegal activities, ensure timely and effective handling of reported information, and plug loopholes in the leakage of citizens' personal information. The key to cracking down on online "unboxing" behavior lies in cutting off the personal information trafficking industry chain and strengthening database protection. Network operators should also strictly keep confidential the user information they collect and establish a sound system for protecting user information. In addition, it is necessary to further enhance the legal awareness of netizens, strengthen the supervision responsibility of guardians for the online safety of minors, and improve their ability to distinguish right from wrong.
