The resolution of technical and standard issues will drive the large-scale implementation of 5G-A

2024-08-14

5G-A is a technology in the evolution stage from 5G to 6G. On the one hand, the birth of 5G-A is to improve and strengthen the shortcomings of the original 5G technology; On the other hand, it is a deep exploration of the development path of 6G, continuously expanding the boundaries on the basis of the traditional capability triangle of speed, latency, and number of connections, and creating a new 5G-A network with high-speed, ubiquitous, intelligent, and deterministic services. Low altitude economy has become an important application scenario for 5G-A for two main reasons: firstly, there is a strong demand for 5G-A in drone communication. At present, drone communication is mainly used to transmit data information such as flight control and images, which requires high requirements for network continuous and stable coverage and reliability. 5G-A supports integrated air ground technology and deterministic network capabilities, which can better meet the above needs. Secondly, there is a strong demand for 5G-A in airspace supervision. Regulatory requirements include the need for wide area detection, perception, and control of all types of drones. 5G-A supports integrated communication and sensing technology, which combines traditional base stations with radar sensing functions to achieve communication and sensing integration. It has the advantages of being able to connect networks and has high cost-effectiveness, and is expected to become the mainstream technology for low altitude detection and sensing. In the short term, 5G-A will be quickly implemented in two major scenarios: low altitude logistics distribution and low altitude city supervision, and many cases have already emerged. In terms of low altitude logistics delivery, Meituan has started providing drone delivery services through connected drones in Shenzhen, Guangdong, greatly improving delivery efficiency. In terms of low altitude city supervision, Yunnan Baoshan Airport has used 5G-A low altitude sensing technology as an auxiliary means of intrusion prevention, forming a new model of 5G-A smart airport intrusion prevention. To achieve the commercialization of large-scale business applications in more scenarios, it is necessary to continue to address issues related to key technologies, standard setting, and industry collaboration in the future. One is that some key technologies for low altitude intelligent networking need to be tackled. The perceptual performance needs to be further improved in complex scenarios and multi-target recognition; Further research is needed on low altitude coverage schemes at altitudes above 1000 meters. The second is that the standards for low altitude intelligent networking need to be unified. The industry technical standards for low altitude intelligent networking related networks and networked unmanned aerial vehicle equipment are not yet clear and unified, which increases the cost of technology research and development and management difficulties. The third is that the low altitude intelligent networking industry needs to be coordinated. The efficient cooperation mechanism and sustainable business model between the entire industry chain of low altitude upstream, midstream, and downstream still need to be explored. (New Society)
