Allergens need to be prevented as the autumn pollen season has reached its peak

2024-08-14

At present, the city has entered the autumn pollen season. Wang Xueyan, director of the Allergic Reaction Center at Beijing Century Altar Hospital, reminds allergy patients to minimize contact with pollen in the near future, reduce travel during strong winds and thunderstorms, wear masks when going out, and promptly remove their outer clothing, wash their hands, eyes, and nose after returning indoors to avoid pollen allergies. The daily pollen concentration monitoring of the Allergy Center Pollen Research Room of Century Altar Hospital found that after the beginning of autumn, the main allergenic pollen floating in the air of this city is Humulus/Cannabis, Quinoa/Amaranthaceae, Poaceae pollen, Artemisia, etc. The average weekly amount of main allergenic pollen is less than 50 per thousand square millimeters, which is at a low concentration level, but overall shows an upward trend. The autumn allergenic pollen is mainly composed of herbaceous plants, mostly wild weeds commonly found in fields, parks, and roadside areas. The peak period of pollen concentration in autumn in this city is expected to be from mid to late August to late September. Wang Xueyan introduced that there has been an increase in the number of allergy patients admitted to the Allergy Center of Century Altar Hospital recently, with about 250 people per day, which is directly related to the increase in pollen concentration. Based on past consultations, it is estimated that after entering the peak pollen concentration period in autumn, the daily number of allergic patients may reach up to 600. According to Wang Lianglu, chief physician of the Allergy Department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, pollen allergy is mainly manifested as a series of symptoms, including nasal conjunctivitis, runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose, blocked nose, itchy eyes, etc. Individual patients may also experience symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. If pollen allergy symptoms are mild and there are no asthma symptoms, antihistamines such as loratadine and desloratadine can be taken orally, or nasal spray hormone therapy can be used; If the symptoms are severe, especially asthma symptoms, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
