Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease. In recent years, with the acceleration of modern people's pace of life, the increase of work and study pressure, and the change of diet structure, excessive calorie intake and chronic inflammation of the body have emerged, resulting in a high incidence rate of overweight and obesity. Obesity has become one of the main problems of public health in China. On August 14th, the multidisciplinary joint outpatient clinic for obesity and related diseases, integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine, was officially opened at Beijing Ditan Hospital. According to Feng Ying, Deputy Chief Physician of the Center for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine at Beijing Ditan Hospital, the hospital integrates multidisciplinary resources and has an expert team composed of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, nutrition, and nursing disciplines. Through "one-stop" diagnosis and treatment services, the hospital comprehensively evaluates the physical fitness of patients with overweight, obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, fatty liver, elevated blood sugar, hyperuricemia, and provides standardized and scientific prevention, diagnosis, treatment, dietary therapy, and rehabilitation individualized plans for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, guiding scientific and standardized weight loss. A study in 2023 showed that the overall overweight population in China accounted for 34.8%, and the obese population accounted for 14.1%. The proportion of males who are overweight is 41.1%, while that of females is 27.7%; The obesity rate among males is 18.2%, while among females it is 9.4%. These data remind everyone that obesity has become an urgent health issue, not only affecting individual physical health, but also becoming a huge public health problem Feng Ying said that recently, the National Health Commission has also issued the Implementation Plan for the "Weight Management Year" campaign, hoping to promote a civilized and healthy lifestyle, enhance the awareness and skills of weight management among the public, prevent and control overweight and obesity, and effectively promote the advancement of chronic disease prevention and control. Feng Ying introduced that the most common complications of overweight and obese people in China are fatty liver disease, precursor diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension. There are a large number of young people among obese patients, who are prone to psychological problems such as depression. This group of people is the backbone of their families and workplaces, and their illness has a significant impact on the patients themselves, their families, and society. In addition, some elderly patients with obesity have multiple geriatric diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, hyperlipidemia, and elevated blood sugar, as well as metabolic diseases such as fatty liver. The condition is complex, and multiple diseases are mutually causal. As the disease progresses, treatment becomes more difficult. Therefore, by screening and diagnosing obese individuals, early intervention, diagnosis, and treatment can be effectively initiated for potential diseases, which is of great significance for improving the health status and quality of life of individuals and groups.
