Sustainable measurement of blood pressure using non-invasive technology of ultrasound monitoring arterial resonance
2024-08-13
A multidisciplinary research team from the California Institute of Technology has solved a problem that has plagued the medical community for decades: they have found a non-invasive and continuous method to measure blood pressure in any part of the body, with almost no interference to patients. Devices based on this new technology are expected to better monitor vital signs in homes, hospitals, and even remote areas with limited resources. The new patented technology recently published in the journal Nexus of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States is called a resonance sound pressure meter, which uses sound waves to gently stimulate arterial resonance, and then uses ultrasound imaging to measure arterial resonance frequency, thereby obtaining real blood pressure measurements. In a small clinical study, the detection results of the device were similar to those obtained using standard care blood pressure cuffs. The current prototype device is manufactured and tested by Esperto Medical Company, and is installed in a transducer box smaller than a deck of cards, which can be mounted on an armband. But researchers say that it can ultimately be packaged in watches or adhesive patch sized packages. The team's goal is to first use the device in hospitals, connecting it to existing hospital monitors through wires to facilitate doctors' continuous real-time blood pressure monitoring of patients. This device can ultimately replace blood pressure cuffs. The blood pressure cuff must be worn every time it is measured, and if the patient is required to monitor blood pressure at home, the information must be repeatedly recorded. With the new device, patients can wear it all day long and take any number of measurements at any time, so that doctors can better and more accurately guide medication administration. (New Society)
