Five new species of spider egg hugging genus discovered in Guangxi
2024-08-09
The reporter learned from the Forestry Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region that the technical team of the Guangxi Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently found five new plant species in Baise and Hechi areas during a comprehensive scientific investigation in the Southwest Karst National Park creation area. After team dissection observation and systematic review of relevant literature and specimens at home and abroad, it was confirmed that the above-mentioned species is a new species of the spider egg genus that has never been described or reported before. The research results were recently published in the international plant taxonomy journal Phytotaxa. It is reported that the five new plant species discovered this time are Longjiang spider eggs, Red spotted spider eggs, Du'an spider eggs, Yachang spider eggs, and Multi lobed spider eggs. This discovery also increased the number of species of the spider egg genus in Guangxi from 87 to 92, further confirming the diversity of germplasm resources in this genus. Lin Chunrui, a researcher at the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that Aspidistra is one of the characteristic dominant plant groups in Guangxi karst areas. The newly discovered species are mainly distributed in the karst mountains of central, western, and northwestern Guangxi. They often prefer to grow in shaded or damp areas under natural forests such as stone troughs, crevices, caves, or narrow depressions. Their crisscrossing rhizomes and dense fibrous roots have significant effects on maintaining karst soil and water. In recent years, with the gradual discovery of new species of this genus, the diversity of color and morphological structure of flowers in this genus has been greatly enriched. Xu Weibin, a researcher at the Guangxi Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that these new species of Aspidistra are endemic to the narrow region, providing new data for the study of Guangxi flora geography and the study of karst plant diversity in surrounding countries and regions, as well as new materials and ideas for desertification control in karst areas, which has important scientific research and development value. According to records, spider egg hugging plants are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical mountains in eastern Asia, and are endemic to Asia. They are one of the fastest growing groups of species within the genus among angiosperms in recent times. China is the country with the largest natural distribution of species in the spider egg genus, with over half of the species now belonging to this genus. (New Society)
