Using cross-border e-commerce 'small packages' to leverage the global market
2024-08-08
In recent years, cross-border e-commerce in China has developed rapidly. Data shows that there are currently about 9 million "small packages" traveling between China and countries around the world every day, making it more convenient and efficient for consumers to "shop globally". In the past 5 years, the scale of cross-border e-commerce trade in China has grown more than 10 times. In the first half of 2024, China's cross-border e-commerce imports and exports amounted to 122 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.5%, which is 4.4 percentage points higher than the overall growth rate of China's foreign trade during the same period. Cross border e-commerce is a vital force in the development of China's foreign trade and an important trend in the development of international trade. Cross border e-commerce is driven by technological innovation, actively utilizing new technologies, adapting to new trends, cultivating new driving forces, and coordinating with new foreign trade infrastructure such as overseas warehouses. It can reduce intermediate links and directly reach consumers, promote the optimization of foreign trade structure and scale stability, and create new advantages for international economic cooperation. Along the way, the overall scale of cross-border e-commerce in China has grown from small to large and from large to excellent, becoming a new highlight in foreign trade and global economic and trade fields, a new engine for promoting high-quality development of foreign trade, and a new driving force for foreign trade growth. Cross border e-commerce platforms provide opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises to enter the international market, which helps them expand their market and establish their brand; Promote supply chain optimization, reduce operating costs for enterprises, and enable them to focus on product research and development and brand building; Providing multiple payment methods, multilingual services, etc., makes it more convenient for global consumers to purchase goods and enhances the shopping experience. Since its inception, cross-border e-commerce has attracted increasing attention from businesses and consumers due to its unique business model and broad development prospects. Starting from a small scale, cross-border e-commerce has grown rapidly, helping Chinese products reach the world and injecting new momentum into promoting the construction of a strong foreign trade country. According to preliminary statistics from various regions, the number of cross-border e-commerce entities in China has exceeded 120000, with over 1000 cross-border e-commerce industrial parks and over 2500 overseas warehouses covering an area of over 30 million square meters. Among them, there are over 1800 overseas warehouses dedicated to serving cross-border e-commerce, covering an area of over 22 million square meters. As of now, China has established bilateral e-commerce cooperation mechanisms with 31 countries, and cross-border e-commerce has become an important bridge connecting the world market and a powerful "Chinese force" that stimulates foreign trade vitality. The rise and development of cross-border e-commerce is due to the continuous release of policy dividends. From the first mention of the term "cross-border e-commerce" in the 2014 Government Work Report to the eleventh inclusion of cross-border e-commerce in the government work report in 2024, a series of policy measures have provided a favorable development environment for cross-border e-commerce. Recently, the Ministry of Commerce and nine other departments issued the "Opinions on Expanding Cross border E-commerce Exports and Promoting Overseas Warehouse Construction", proposing to cultivate cross-border e-commerce business entities and strengthen the training of cross-border e-commerce talents; Increase financial support and strengthen the construction of relevant infrastructure and logistics systems. With the development of overseas warehouses, more and more high-quality and cost-effective Chinese products will be able to be conveniently delivered to overseas consumers, bringing convenience to their production and life. With more cross-border e-commerce, leading enterprises, logistics companies, and small and medium-sized enterprises in the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain in China gaining opportunities to participate in international market competition, it will further consolidate China's position in the global supply chain and cross-border trade network, and stimulate new momentum in foreign trade. Currently, a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation is advancing rapidly, and the global digital economy is flourishing, providing new opportunities for the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce. With the continuous improvement of the entire industry ecosystem of cross-border e-commerce in China, including infrastructure, product research and development, scientific stocking, warehousing and distribution, marketing and promotion, as well as customer service and after-sales, the potential of cross-border e-commerce will be further unleashed. Looking towards the future, developing new forms of foreign trade such as cross-border e-commerce and overseas warehouses is not only conducive to promoting the optimization of foreign trade structure and stable scale, but also provides strong support for consolidating and enhancing the positive trend of economic recovery, and is more conducive to creating new advantages for international economic cooperation.
