Ketogenic diet may increase levels of unhealthy cholesterol

Ketogenic diet is a special formula diet that is high in fat, moderate in protein, and extremely low in carbohydrates. A recent study conducted by scientists at the University of Bath in the UK shows that compared to a low sugar diet, a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet has a more significant weight loss effect, but it can also increase levels of bad cholesterol in the body. The relevant paper was published in the latest issue of Cell Reports Medicine. The research team recruited 53 participants with an average age of 34, none of whom were obese. About one-third of them follow a ketogenic diet, with carbohydrate intake accounting for less than 8% of total energy and fat accounting for over 70%. Another third of the participants followed a low sugar diet, with free sugar intake accounting for 5% of total energy, and non free sugar carbohydrates and fats accounting for 45% and 35%, respectively. The remaining one-third of the participants served as the control group. All three types of dietary protein intake account for 15% to 18% of total energy. One month later, the scan results showed that the average weight loss of the three groups of participants was 1.6, 1, and 0 kilograms, respectively. Moreover, the reduction in fat is due to a decrease in calorie intake. Compared with the control group, although the ketogenic group lost the most weight, these individuals had 16% higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is bad cholesterol, and 26% higher levels of apolipoprotein B protein in their bodies. Apolipoprotein B protein can block arteries and increase the risk of heart related events. The LDL level in the low sugar diet group decreased by 10%, while the apolipoprotein B protein level remained unchanged. (New Society)
