Italian archaeologists: Italy China cooperation on world cultural heritage promotes mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations

2024-07-30

Several Italian archaeologists recently stated in an interview with Xinhua News Agency that Italy and China should continue to cooperate around world cultural heritage sites, help the two countries and the world better understand the history and culture of Italy and China, and promote mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations. Helena Porfirio, a researcher at the Heritage Science Research Institute of the Italian National Research Council, told reporters that Italy and China are both among the countries with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world. These sites provide abundant resources for paired cooperation between the two countries, from historical status, architectural types to cultural landscapes. Both countries can match heritage sites with similar characteristics. In 2019, China and Italy decided to carry out twinning cooperation projects between the West Lake in Hangzhou and the old city of Verona in Italy, and the cultural landscape of Hani Terrace in the Hani terraced fields of Honghe State in Yunnan, and the landscape of Langueiro and Montferrato vineyards. In 2023, the China Italy Forum on the Establishment of World Cultural Heritage Sites was held in Hangzhou, reaffirming the implementation of friendly relations between the two countries and calling for further practical cooperation in areas such as professional training, research projects, application for protection, and exhibition interpretation of world cultural heritage sites. "When the world cultural heritage with similar characteristics is put together, it will undoubtedly promote people to have a deeper understanding of each other's history and culture. Through tourism, digital platforms and other channels, the audience can learn from the wisdom of another place in the similar historical period," said Polferio. China's protection of world cultural heritage is at the forefront of the world, and we look forward to more cooperation between the two countries, "said Robert Chala, an archaeologist from the Italian International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies, to reporters. The potential for cooperation between Italian and Chinese world cultural heritage sites is enormous, and both sides can regularly engage in close exchanges on specific themes related to the protection and promotion of world cultural heritage. This will not only showcase cultural relics to global visitors, but also benefit the management and scientific researchers involved in the cooperation. (New Society)
