Quantum computing should be 'taken out' of the laboratory as soon as possible
2024-07-29
"Quantum computing can't stay in the laboratory forever. Only active industrial applications can be verified and improved in practice. China urgently needs to build a good application ecology of quantum computing." Recently, the 2024 China Quantum Computing Industry Summit and Quantum Computing Developers Conference was held in Huangpu District, Guangzhou. Guo Guangcan, an academician of the CAS Member, said at the meeting. Experts present believe that China is entering an era of rapid development in quantum computing technology. China started researching quantum computing earlier and is currently in the top tier internationally. Guo Guangcan analyzed that the overall research and development level of countries in the first tier is comparable, but they have their own strengths and weaknesses in different technological fields. Zhao Xuejiao, Executive Member of the Quantum Computing Professional Committee of the Chinese Computer Society, said that in recent years, the development of quantum computing in China has faced new challenges, and some countries have taken strict measures to block and restrict quantum computing technology. In this situation, if China's quantum computing industry wants to make breakthroughs, it must continue to increase its independent research and development efforts and improve its independent innovation capabilities. The reporter learned from the meeting that China's third-generation autonomous superconducting quantum computer "Benyuan Wukong" has been online and running since January 6th this year, with over 11 million visitors and 250000 computational tasks completed. This is the first time that China has provided independent quantum computing power services to the world on a long-term, large-scale, and stable basis. Industry university research cooperation is an important way to promote the development of quantum computing technology. In recent years, Guangzhou has attached great importance to the layout and development of future industries such as quantum technology. Especially in Huangpu District, relying on the advantages of high industrial agglomeration, digital infrastructure and application scenarios are laid out in advance to provide comprehensive guarantee for the development of quantum technology industry. Guo Guangcan stated that quantum computers are not meant to replace electronic computers, but to be compatible with them and solve technical and efficiency problems. For example, in the pharmaceutical industry, quantum computers can shorten the manufacturing time of new drugs and improve public health and well-being. (New Society)
